Review: Starbucks - Caramel Brulee Latte

Starbucks Caramel Brulee Latte is a holiday seasonal drink that takes a base of espresso and steamed milk and adds a caramel brulee sauce finishing with whipped cream and caramel pieces. Like all of Starbucks' seasonal coffee-based drinks, pricing is $3.75 for a Tall, $4.45 for a Grande, and $4.75 for a Venti.

Frozen Friday: Hormel - Compleats Chicken Breast & Gravy

Okay, not exactly frozen, but vacuum-sealed, Hormel's Compleats Chicken Breast & Gravy is basically like canned food, but in plastic so that you can stick it in the microwave for the indoorsman who shuns heating cans over a open fire.

For about $3.39, you get a 10-ounces meal that includes a piece of chicken breast, mashed potatoes, and gravy.

News: Jack in the Box - Bonus Jack Returns

Jack in the Box's Big Mac clone, the Bonus Jack is back on Jack's menu for a limited time. Apparently "the sauce is still secret" but also an almost neon bright orange rather than the muted cream orange usually associated with Thousand Island.

It replaces the Really Big Chicken Sandwich's spot in the $3.99 value-priced combo which comes with a small order of fries and a small fountain drink.

I've tried the Bonus Jack before and you can check out my thoughts in this review and the somewhat kinky commercial after the jump.

Review: Little Caesars - Crazy Bread

For as long as I've been to Little Caesars, they've always had Crazy Bread available for dirt cheap to accompany their "Pizza! Pizza!" Crazy Bread comes in an order of eight breadsticks (made from pizza dough as far as I can tell) topped with butter and garlic (or some reasonable facsimile thereof) and a dusting of Parmesan cheese.

There's always a deal for them when you buy a pizza. This time around the deal was two orders (16 breadsticks!) for $2(!).

Review: Carl's Jr. - Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders

Carl's Jr's new Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders are touted being made in house rather than the standard of frozen pre-cooked chicken strips most other chains carry. They're dipped in buttermilk and hand-breaded. Suggested retail price is $2.99 for three, but I paid $3.29 at my local Carl's.

News: Taco Bell - Chicken Enchilada Grilled Stuft Burrito Returns

Fans rejoice! The Grilled Stuft Chicken Enchilada Burrito has returned to the Taco Bell menu.

Last appearing in 2007, the burrito features marinated white meat chicken, enchilada sauce, a three cheese blend (cheddar, pepper jack, and mozzarella), enchilada rice and reduced fat sour cream wrapped in a flour tortilla and pressed to a crisp finish.

It sounds somewhat interesting, but what I really want Taco Bell to bring back is the Grilled Stuft Chicken Caesar Burrito which due to an ordering mishap (they gave me the wrong burrito...), I only got one delicious bite of (...yet they got my friend's order right).

News: Whataburger - 12 Days of Whataburger Free Food

Texas-based burger chain Whataburger is celebrating the holidays by offering 12 Days of Whataburger to customers who opt-in to their email list. Like the "true love" in the carol Twelve Days of Christmas, Whataburger will be giving (by email) 12 gifts (coupons) to subscribers.

The redemptions days are every odd day leading up to Christmas in December (i.e. 12/1, 12/3, 12,5, etc.). Coupons will be emailed prior to each redemption day for a free dine-in Whataburger food item ranging from burgers to sides to dessert.

If you live in the 10 states where Whataburger restaurants are located, you can sign up here. Well, you can sign up regardless, but let's face it, you're probably not going to make the drive to another state unless you really love Whataburger.

Review: Arby's - Philly Beef Toasted Sub

Arby's Philly Beef Toasted Sub is basically a French Dip without the dip, but with the addition of grilled diced onions, mayo, and red and green bell peppers. The price for one is $3.89 but there's often a two for $5 coupon floating about.

Around the World - Pizza Hut Hong Kong - Spanish Tapas Pizza

Pizza Hut dine-in has pretty much died out here in southern California; though I'm sure there much be one or two here or there. But, it seems to have flourished in Hong Kong though where the dine-in experience is more akin to fine dining than what you typically think of Pizza Hut.

The menu is also a lot more varied and fancier than you would expect from Pizza Hut as well. Check out the Spanish Tapas Pizza promo they ran earlier this year; you can see the plating and decor of Pizza Hut dine-in:

News: Pizza Hut - Two Medium Pizzas for $6 Each

Pizza Hut's latest promotion is two medium pizzas, with up to 3 toppings, for $6 each (i.e. $12 total). The deal ends on Saturday, November 20th.

It's comparable to Domino's two medium, 2-topping pizzas for $5.99 each except you can get one more topping if you so choose.

Medium pizzas at Pizza Hut are normally $8 (with up to three toppings) under their new pricing structure.

News: Popeyes - Cajun Style Turkeys are Back

Popeyes Cajun Style Turkeys are back for those of you planning to order one to go with your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

Popeyes Cajun Style Turkeys weigh approximately 9 to 11 pounds and are seasoned with their blend of Louisiana seasonings and then flash-fried for a crispy coating. The turkey is then roasted so that it is crispy outside and juicy within. They carry a suggested retail price of $39.99.

They're only available once a year at participating restaurants through December, or until supplies last. You can check which Popeyes locations are carrying them online.

I've always been curious about these things which are up there with those BBQ joints that will smoke a whole turkey for you. It's just a bit pricey compared to buying and roasting your own turkey but maybe someday...

Review: Taco Bell - Crunchwrap Supreme

Taco Bell's Crunchwrap Supreme is like a uniquely Taco Bell cross between a Tostada and a Burrito Supreme. Specially, it consists of a grilled flour tortilla folded into a hexagon filled with seasoned ground beef, a tostada shell, nacho cheese sauce, reduced fat sour cream, diced tomatoes, and shredded lettuce. Buying one will cost you $2.39.

News: Wendy's - New Natural-Cut Sea Salt Fries

In a bit of a reversal of Jack in the Box's fry change, but in keeping with their own premium theme, Wendy's is replacing their current fries with new Natural-Cut Sea Salt Fries. Pricing will remain the same as their current fries and the roll out begins tomorrow, November 11th.

The new fries are cut skin-on from Russet potatoes and seasoned with sea salt which tends to cost a little more than regular table salt. They are cooked in a new oil formulation which is purported to contain no allergens and 0 grams of trans fat per serving.

The new fries are touted as "hotter, crispier, and tastier" and were tested in three U.S. cities before the decision to launch them nationwide.

Review: Sonic - Chili Cheese Tots

I think Sonic is the only place I know of that offers Chili Cheese Tots which is like Chili Cheese Fries but with Tots instead of French fries. Pricing is $2.19 for a small, $2.59 for a medium, and $3.29 for a large. In addition to chili and cheese, you can ask for onions as well for added flavor and crunch.

News: Wendy's Testing Dave's Hot 'N Juicy Cheeseburger

In what looks like Wendy's answer to McDonald's Angus Third Pounders and Burger King's Steakhouse XT premium burgers, Wendy's is testing their new Dave's Hot 'N Juicy Cheeseburger in Las Vegas for a potential national roll out according to the Las Vegas Sun. Dave's Hot 'N Juicy Cheeseburger's main selling points are: a thicker, juicier beef patty, new premium toppings (red onions, crinkle-cut pickles, and thicker cut tomatoes), and a buttered, toasted bun.

News: McDonald's Jalapeno Cheddar and Cheddar Onion McChicken in San Diego

McDonald’s is offering two new variations of the McChicken sandwich in the San Diego area: the Jalapeño Cheddar and the Cheddar Onion. It's unclear if these are merely regional items or a test for possible expansion. It might portend more McChicken versions to come.

The Jalapeño Cheddar McChicken tops the McChicken patty with spicy jalapeño peppers and white cheddar cheese while the new Cheddar Onion McChicken is made with caramelized onions and white cheddar cheese. Pricing on the new sandwiches is $1.49 each.

In a bit of mobile marketing, San Diego McDonald’s is offering a text message coupon for the new McChicken sandwiches. Customers can text ‘YUMMY’ to 44144 to receive a coupon for one free Jalapeño Cheddar or Cheddar Onion McChicken with any purchase sent directly to their mobile phone. To redeem the coupon, customers simply show the text message coupon on their phone to their McDonald's order-taker.

Review: Little Caesars - Hot-N-Ready Pepperoni Pizza

It's hard to believe but in the early '90s, Little Caesars was the #2 pizza chain in the nation. I ate it quite a bit of their pizzas growing up since you could always count on getting two pizzas for the price of one. Nowadays, they're a distant fourth in the pizza race and have a new gimmick that seems to work well for them: the Hot-N-Ready Pizza for $5.

News: Jack in the Box - Free Tacos on Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Jack in the Box is giving away two Free Tacos per customer on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, but only after 2pm (you know, in case you were planning to get two before work and then two after your nightly commute).

The giveaways is supported by a commercial featuring the titular CEO, a visit to the dentist, and an apparent laughing gas induced delirium:

News: Sonic - 2010 Seasonal Holiday Drinks

And the Holiday Spiced Blast is made with spiced caramel-flavored ice cream, sugar cookies pieces, and whipped topping.

Sonic Tailgate Blanket and Gift Card Winners

It looks like pumpkin is, by far, the favored flavor for the fall/winter season (i.e. the holidays), other items that got mentioned a fair bit were peppermint and egg nog, but on to the winners.

I just pulled the numbers from the proverbial hat (via Random.org) and the runner up winner is... *drum roll* Adam who wins a $25 Sonic gift card and a tailgate blanket.

The grand prize of a $100 Sonic gift card and a tailgate blanket goes to Elaine Hearn.

Congrats to you both! I will send you an email shortly to get your mailing addresses.

Review: Burger King - Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich

The other half to the Tendergrill, Burger King's Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich features a deep-fried breaded chicken breast filet served with the standard lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo sandwiched into a corn-dusted bun. It is priced in the premium sandwich range for $4.19.

News: McDonald's - Holiday Pie this Winter 2010!

Depending on your local McDonald's franchisee, your local McDonald's may or may not have Holiday Pie on the menu this holiday season starting on November 18th until December 31st.

So what is a McDonald's Holiday Pie? It is a custard-filled baked turnover with what appears to be a confetti cake crust covered with a sugary white icing. I wouldn't say it makes me think of Christmas or the holidays though; maybe a kid's birthday, but no, not the holidays.

If you're so inclined to try one, I suggest calling ahead first as not all McDonald's will stock them; it's up to each franchisee's election.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, I have two confirmed locations for you:

5310 W. Rosecrans Ave.
Hawthorne CA 90250

1203 Artesia Blvd.
Manhattan Beach CA 90266

News: Domino's - Play "Behind the Pizza" for Free $5 Gift Card

Domino's is working to inform customers about their ingredients supply chain with a new edutainment game dubbed "Behind the Pizza" at more.dominos.com/behindthepizza. To encourage users to play, Domino's is offering incentives at several point tiers for various stages of completion of the game (in a game-show-like manner where you give up your prize for a better prize at the next tier).

At 1 point, users can get a coupon for free Cinna Stix with their next order.

At 50 points is a coupon for free Chocolate Lava Crunch Cakes with your next order.

At 100 points is a buy one, get one free large pizza.

Finally, at the end of it all, you can play a pizza-making game for a $5 Domino's gift card. Update: There seems to be great difficulty in either a) getting a gift card or b) getting a gift card that works. Looks like they didn't quite test the fulfillment aspect of the promotion too well. This looks like it might be a black mark against Domino's if Facebook is any indication. Domino's has taken the game down, saying they've run out of prizes and that it'll be back.

Completion of the entire game probably takes about 20 minutes by my rough guess. There's no "game over," so the prizes are pretty much a given as long as you work your way through.

News: The Coffee Bean - $1 Holiday Drinks on November 9th

The Coffee Bean usually does a freebie day on their limited-time drinks once per season, but since it is the season for giving, this holiday season, it'll cost you a $1 to get a 12-ounce holiday drink on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010, 4 to 7pm.

So where's the giving part? The dollar you pay will go to The Help Group, a nonprofit benefiting children with special needs.

Where: Participating The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf locations in AZ and CA.
When: Tuesday, November 9th, 2010, 4 to 7pm.
Why: Proceeds go to children with special needs. For $1, you get your choice of a 12-ounce Red Velvet Hot Cocoa or Ice-Blended (isn't that just hot cocoa with red food coloring?!), Winter Dream Tea Latte, or Gingerbread Cookie Latte.

Review: Seattle's Best Canned Iced Latte

Seattle's Best Canned Iced Coffee comes in a tall, thin 9.5-ounce can (like Red Bull) and features a blend of milk, coffee, and sugar. The suggested retail price is $1.49 for a single can and $4.99 for a four-pack (though will probably go up with the way coffee prices are).

Around the World - KFC Asia - Flava Roast Chicken

Since I touched upon KFC's Flava Roast Chicken (the analog to KFC's Grilled Chicken in some Asian countries) last week, I found a couple of interesting commercials for it, including this fairly recent one from Vietnam featuring a boy band singing about Flava Roast Chicken:

The McRib isn't the only boneless pork patty shaped like a mini rack of ribs, Hungry-Man's Boneless Pork Ribs feature two similar patties with barbecue sauce, home-style mashed potatoes, sweet corn, and a chocolate brownie. Hungry-Man dinners are usually priced at $3.69, but often go on sale for less than $2. Plus, right now you can print out a $2 off coupon on Facebook and basically get a free Hungry-Man.

Review: McDonald's - Caramel Mocha

New to McDonald's McCafe lineup, the Caramel Mocha is just a Mocha (espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate syrup) but with the addition of caramel syrup, topped with whipped cream and a caramel syrup drizzle. You can choose either nonfat or whole milk (2% and soy not available).

My local McDonald's recently decided to price all of their McCafe beverages the same from the Frappes to the Smoothies to the coffee-based drinks. Even the Hot Chocolate. Prices are $2.29 for a 12-ounce small, $2.79 for a 16-ounce medium, and $3.19 for a 20-ounce large (that's tall, grande, and venti respectively in Starbucks speak).

News: Starbucks - Seasonal Holiday Drinks 2010

Gingerbread Latte
Egg Nog Latte
November marks the return of Starbucks' seasonal holiday drinks: the Egg Nog Latte and Gingerbread Latte.

The Gingerbread Latte is espresso with steamed milk (i.e. a latte) plus gingerbread-flavored syrup. It is then topped with whipped cream and nutmeg.

The Egg Nog Latte features espresso with steamed eggnog and milk, topped with ground nutmeg. It's been around since 1986!

Update 11/16/2010 - Starbucks has added the Caramel Brulee Latte and Peppermint Mocha (also available in White Chocolate form and not listed as "seasonal" online) to the mix.

The Caramel Brulee Latte features espresso and steamed milk with caramel Brulee sauce topped with whipped cream and caramel pieces.

The Peppermint Mocha is a blend of espresso, steamed milk, peppermint syrup, and bittersweet chocolate topped with whipped cream and chocolate pieces.

All coffee-based holiday drinks are priced as follows (may vary with location): $3.75 for a Tall, $4.25 for a Grande, and $4.75 for a Venti.

Also new is a Christmas Blend version of Starbucks Via instant coffee.

News: Taco Bell Testing Reduced-Sodium Menu

While fast food is often derided for being high in calories and fat, it is less often pointed out how high in sodium a lot of fast food items are. So for those of you watching or trying to reduce your sodium intake, you'll be happy to hear that, according to NRNTaco Bell has been testing a lower-sodium menu in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and that it's very likely to expand nationwide.

The overall change is about a 23% reduction in sodium across the Taco Bell menu that, notably, customers haven't noticed.

As someone who often finds a lot of fast food a little too salty, I'm looking forward to the change (even if I don't notice it).

Review: McDonald's - McRib

I finally tried my first McRib ever. And, it was good! For those of you who don't know, the McRib is a pork sandwich at McDonald's (much like almost anything with a "Mc" prefix) featuring a formed ground pork patty slathered in barbecue sauce, topped with slivers of onions and a couple of pickle slices, and served on a corn-meal-dusted 6-inch roll. Pricing is around the Big Mac range at a reasonable $2.69.

It comes and goes like a stray cat (well, except in Germany where it's a permanent menu item) and will be available nationally this time until December 5th.

News: McDonald's - New McCafe Caramel Mocha

Lost in all the hubub of the nationwide return of the McRib, McDonald's Caramel Mocha is new to the McCafe menu and is promoted as a hot drink to warm you up this winter.

While you could already order a Mocha or a Caramel Frappe off the menu, you can now basically combine the two and order a Caramel Mocha.

It's basically a Latte with chocolate and caramel syrup, topped with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle. I would guess you would have be able to have them make you one before (just order a "Mocha with caramel syrup") but it's now officially on the menu.

News: Togo's - Now Available Toasted

A bit of a Johnny-come-lately to the toasted party, West Coast sandwich shop, Togo's can now toast your sandwich if you so choose.

To highlight the change, as well as the addition of applewood smoked bacon and pepper jack cheese to their ingredient choices, Togo's is showcasing four new Toasted Sandwiches:

News: Chick-fil-A - Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshake is Back

With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, Chick-fil-A has once again brought back their hand-spun Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshake made with their Icedream soft-serve and topped with light whipped cream and a marachino cherry.

They're available in 14- and 20-ounce sizes for the suggested prices of $2.55 and $2.95 respectively.

Additionally, this time of the year also marks the new 2011 Chick-fil-A calender which costs $6 (free when you buy a $20 Chick-fil-A gift card; only at some locations) and features the Chick-fil-A cows in reality-TV-themed get ups. The calendar is available until January and has the added bonus of monthly coupons for free Chick-fil-A food and drinks.

Review: Taco Bell - Double Decker Taco

From what I remember, the Double Decker Taco was when Taco Bell started getting weird with their menu selections. Now I don't mean that in a bad way and it might not be true but, in my mind, before the Double Decker Taco, Taco Bell was tacos, burritos, nachos, etc. You know, traditional Mexican-themed dishes.

After the Double Decker, they started coming out with things like the Crunchwrap Supreme, the Chalupa, the Gordita, etc. Things that are either completely Taco Bell or so very far from their original origins that they are still like de facto Taco Bell.

News: Sonic - New Tex Mex Coney

Nothing says football like Tex-Mex? At least that's what's Sonic is counting on this fall with the introduction of their new limited-time Tex-Mex Footlong Quarter Pound Coney. I guess if Friday Night Lights taught me anything, it's that football is life in Texas. But back to the hot dog.

Sonic's Tex-Mex Footlong Quarter Pound Coney is covered in chili and cheese and topped with Fritos, sliced jalapenos, diced onions, and chipotle sauce. $3.99 buys you a Tex-Mex Footlong Quarter Pound Coney and an order of Tots. Having eaten the regular Footlong Quarter Pound Coney, I'd recommend you go halves with a friend.

News: Dunkin' Donuts - New Sausage Pancake Bites

A bit like a pig in a blanket or a mini corn dog, Dunkin' Donuts' new oven-toasted Sausage Pancake Bites feature mini sausages covered in a maple-flavored pancake. Pricing stands at $1.59 for three or $3 for six.

In appearance, they kinda remind me of a deep-fried dim sum dish or the aforementioned mini corn dog. They're small enough to just pop in your mouth like the way Garfield eats lasagna (and yet, somehow, eerily remains clean).

Review: Arby's - French Dip & Swiss Toasted Sub

Arby's French Dip & Swiss Toasted Sub features Arby's trademark thin-sliced roast beef with melted Swiss cheese on a toasted ciabatta bun served with a side of hot aus jus. It's priced at $3.89, but there's usually a coupon in a mailer that shaves the price down to two for $5 (It used to be two for $4!).

Around the World - KFC Hong Kong - Breakfast

Review: Starbucks - Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

Look! They give you a plastic Starbucks mermaid stirrer! Only sometimes though.
Starbucks' Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate is a fall seasonal drink that features a hot chocolate made with mocha sauce and toffee nut syrup (apparently two separate syrups and not the same stuff used for the Toffee Mocha), topped with whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, and finished with a sprinkled blend of sea salt and Hawaiian Turbinado sugar (i.e. raw sugar). The price for this warm, fall concoction is $2.70 for a 12-ounce Tall.
