Review: Sonic - Jumbo Popcorn Chicken

Sonic's Jumbo Popcorn Chicken are much larger than KFC's Popcorn Chicken but slightly smaller than your standard chicken nugget. They're of the battered variety and come in a large 6-ounce order for $4.39. That's more expensive than your standard chicken nugget, but they are made of bite-sized pieces of white meat chicken rather than the ground stuff which tends to cost more.

Sonic's Jumbo Popcorn Chicken falls into the middle ground as far as crispiness goes. They're not extra crispy like KFC's chicken strips, but they're not almost soft either. The batter is fairly thick for chicken nuggets. As far as my "local" (it's actually 25 to 30 minutes aways) Sonic goes, all the chicken items I've gotten there have been slightly on the dry side.
Part of the Sonic experience, they bring your food to your car on roller skates!
Taste-wise, Jumbo Popcorn Chicken are fairly neutral and almost taste unseasoned beyond salt and pepper. I'd like them better if there were some other spices thrown in that I could taste. On the other hand, their fairly neutral demeanor lends itself well to dipping. Sonic offers ranch, honey mustard, and BBQ sauce for their Jumbo Popcorn Chicken. I've tried them all and they taste like most other fast food sauces of the same type.
Overall, Sonic's Jumbo Popcorn Chicken are good, but not great. A competent effort but a little more seasoning would go a long way.

  1. I would personally say these are very good. Mine have always been seasoned well, like everything else at Sonic. It's hard to believe your reviews for things I havent tried.

  2. The Sonic's where I live also doesn't season their chicken very much, although there's the right amount of salt for me. That being said, at least it seems like pretty good quality chicken. It works with dipping, and I like to dip my chicken in barbecue sauce anyways.
