Frozen Friday: Marie Callender's - Country Fried Beef Steak

Marie Callender's Country Fried Beef Steak frozen meal comes with a deep fried battered and breaded ground beef patty, mashed potatoes, and glazed carrots.

They retail for around $3.99 with a sale price usually around $2.00 to $2.50.

I am more likely to buy a frozen dinner that has a meat item that is deep-fried because deep frying is such a hassle; you have to use a lot of oil and it can be pretty messy. Plus I don't know what you're supposed to do with all that oil afterwards. So buying it already cooked is a pretty easy option for me.
In this case the breading didn't turn out too well; it was fairly soggy and soft with no crisp or crunch whatsoever. Wasted carbs in my book. The meat itself turned out pretty well though; it was coarsely ground, tender, and juicy with a nice, strong, peppery flavor.
I didn't care too much for the glazed carrots. Not for any deficiency on their part, I just didn't like eating sweet carrots. The carrots themselves turned out quite well; soft, but not too soft. They're glazed with a sweet cinnamon glaze. Plain steamed carrots would have been fine by me.
The gravy wasn't really necessary and comes in a separate pouch so that you can use as much or as little as you like. I used it a sparingly as both the steak and the mashed potatoes had flavor and enough salt to satisfy. The mashed potatoes had plenty of flavor on their own with a smooth, even consistency.

  1. Those Marie Callender's concoctions tend to be at least a wee bit superior in many ways to the typical frozen foods.

As you mentioned, the sale price is the way to go.

Awhile back, before the soul-sapping inflation struck, a local stored offered most varieties of Marie Callender's fare at ten for ten bucks.

That's somewhere around a buck each!!! I bought a horde of them!!!

I am unsure if the mark-up on the stuff is actually that HIGH or if the sale price was a loss-leader to compel the local human herd to enter and by purchasing other things to make up for the loss from selling Marie's frozen goodies.

  2. I think at a buck, it's definitely a loss leader to drive in traffic.
