Review: Burger King - Chef's Choice Burger

Burger King's Chef's Choice Burger promises a gussied up fast food burger experience with a 1/3 pound seasoned ground chuck patty, thick-cut bacon, American cheese, red onions, sliced tomatoes, romaine leaf lettuce and savory Griller sauce (garlic mayo) on an brioche artisan-style bun.

The price is gussied up a bit too at $4.99 a pop.

The Chef's Choice Burger seems to be a replacement for the Steakhouse XT line which has disappeared from Burger King's website.
My Chef's Choice Burger was looking pretty good. The bun was a bit flattened despite the burger coming in a box but everything looked appropriately fresh, charred, melted, etc.

Let's start with likes. I liked the bun. It's fairly dense, soft, and moister than the standard burger bun. It's got a slight bit of sweetness as well. It's better than the buns from comparable offerings at Wendy's and McDonald's. It does feel a little small though.

The thick cut bacon is fairly standard but I like bacon so it's a plus. It's not remarkably thick but it's thicker than the typical razor-thin fast food bacon and that's good enough for me. It adds a nice crispness.
The Romaine lettuce feels pretty fancy but unfortunately, there was only one small leaf. Needless to say, one leaf doesn't hold up so well against the rest of the ingredients and more lettuce is needed to counterbalance the saltier items like the patty and sauce. There was a good amount of fresh tomatoes and red onions though.

As far as meat and cheese goes, the cheese is pretty standard and nicely melted and the beef patty had a decent char and was juicy but was way over-seasoned. The patty really could have been made of any meat because much of the beef flavor was covered up by the seasoning. I would have rather had an unseasoned patty than what I got.

Sauce wise, the Griller Sauce (same as on the Mushroom & Swiss BK Topper) is just a garlic mayo. It's not bad, a little more tart but nothing special.

As it stands, Burger King's Chef's Choice Burger was a miss (close but no cigar) for me; the quality was there but lack of lettuce combined with the over-seasoned patty left me with an off-kilter and pricey fast food burger.

News story, not a review etc

The MANY comments to the news story was what I found interesting and compelled me to place the link here.

Driving past one of the several local BKs I notice the, to me, rather repulsive cooking odors flooding the major intersection.

And decades of smoking has numbed my odor-detecting projection jutting out of my ugly mug.

If my deadened nose can be fouled with an odor diffused by the height of the cooking device's outlet then having to cross a parking lot, a sidewalk and a lane of traffic... what IS going on inside BK?

I should wander in and determine exactly what cooking method and device is in use.

Broiled? Sent down the device that keeps the raw patties moving and flames/heat leaping up to do the cooking?

Whatever method the "aroma" fleeing the facility is unappetizing to me.

I HAVE had yummy burgers from BK in the past but as stated previously I have greatly minimized fast-food eating but not eliminated totally.

    Reading other's comments is enlightening.

I recall the past when the Whopper WAS a WHOPPER!!!

Even I, a BIG eater of immense quantities was impressed with Whoppers from the past.

Viewing today's Whopper (do they still exist? It's been a long time since I looked for one to order) and it HAS been awhile since I saw and held one and I noticed it was not nearly as BIG as Whoppers of the were.

  2. I'd say that's kind of an odd comparison, since In-N-Out doesn't really offer this type of burger. I love In-N-Out, but they don't have 1/3 pound patties, no bacon, etc. Still, this sounds like yet another "premium" disappointment, which is too bad.

  3. Not even close to an In-N-Out burger and for way more money, too.

  5. $4.99 seems like a stretch for this.
