Review: Taco Bell - Crispy Chicken Wings

Taco Bell's Crispy Chicken Wings feature bone-in, crispy-fried chicken wings coated in a new Mexican Queso seasoning.

An order of five wings cost me $5.99, which is comparable to KFC wings in my area (six wings for $7.99).

The Mexican Queso seasoning was an orange-colored powder that was dusted on the wings. It was fairly mild, with the barest hint of cheesiness and a slight savory sweetness that was only apparent when I was licking the seasoning off my fingers. In short, the Mexican Queso seasoning was mostly for show and the wings tasted a lot like regular, plain fried chicken wings. Given the relative plainness, the Spicy Ranch sauce that was included for dipping added a welcome amount of richness and spicy heat.

The wings themselves were on the small side but just slightly. They were a tad dry but the meat had some saltiness to it to enhance the taste.

The breading was quite thick and dense enough for a very satisfying, audible crunch--but not so dense that it flaked off, as it was more of a crumbly-type breading. It was also overly salted, which may have been the reason that the Mexican Queso seasoning didn't come across very well.

When it comes down to it, Taco Bell's Crispy Chicken Wings were competitive as far as fast food wings go, especially if you like some crunch to your breading, but they didn't stand out in terms of any Taco Bell-type flavors. They might have been better served just dusting the wings with some Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos seasoning.
