Review: El Pollo Loco - Loco Burrito Grillers

El Pollo Loco Burrito Grillers feature chopped, citrus-marinated, fire-grilled chicken or shredded beef as well as shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, and diced onions, wrapped up in a soft, Sonoran-style tortilla and then grilled.

It's normally $8.69 for one of each Loco Burrito Griller, a side of chips, and Loco Dipping Sauce but I got these for $6 using a coupon.

My local El Pollo Loco seems to have some stocking or supply issues as I went around 8 or 9 PM (they close at 11 PM) on two different weeks to try these (the second trip was even cheaper than the first as they had a $5 off coupon in the app) and each time they rattled off a laundry list of things they didn't have. They also didn't have (or didn't carry) the box for these.

The first time, they gave me a large bag of chips and a cup of salsa roja when they said they didn't have chips or salsa but the second time they gave me neither and I had to ask for sauce (I ordered both times through the mobile app). Long story short: I was able to try the Loco Burrito Grillers but not the Loco Dipping Sauce (however, I have tried the sauce without the queso when it was previously offered).

So what I can say is that the Loco Burrito Grillers turned out quite well. They're a bit on the short side as far as fast food burritos but were well-filled with both meat and cheese.

The both chicken and beef offered a nice amount of meaty, seasoned flavor. The chicken was slightly drier, while the beef was both juicy and tender.

The melted cheese added a satisfying creamy flavor and gooey texture, while the cilantro and onions contributed light touches of flavor.

Both burritos seemed to have gotten some extra time in the grill-press although one got the ideal amount as it developed both a crunch and toasty notes on the surface without being burnt. The tortillas had a nice bit of elasticity to them where not toasty.

I tried dipping the Loco Burrito Grillers in both salsa roja and avocado salsa. Both worked well as they added a welcome tang to the burritos. The salsa roja was the spicier of the two, while the avocado had a bit more richness.

Overall, El Pollo Loco's Loco Burrito Grillers turned out really well. They felt a bit like a burrito version of a melt sandwich, which was pretty great.
