Review: Burger King - Whopper

Burger King Whopper - topview
The Burger King Whopper is perhaps one of the most well-known burgers throughout the world. Where rival McDonald's went tall with the club-sandwich-style Big Mac, Burger King went wide with the Whopper.

The Whopper features a 1/4 pound flame-broiled beef patty, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, pickles, and onions on a toasted sesame seed bun for $3.59(!) in these parts (price varies with location).
Inside the Burger King Whopper
A current Burger King regional promotion, with varied participation around the U.S., is "Whopper Wednesday," which in southern California means $2.99 Whopper Value Meals (small fries and a drink) on Wednesdays (an individual Whopper is also available for a discount at $1.69.)

I've always liked the flame-grilled Whopper patty.  I remember back in the day, the mouth-watering smell of Whopper patties cooking wafted from quite aways and your nose would lead you to Burger King.  It doesn't happen anymore these days though, I guess maybe they're required to filter out the smell or something.

The ingredients usually go well together as far as flavors go, although there's sometimes too much mayo and it gets a little messy.  The bun is fairly soft and holds up well and the meat while thin is present tastewise and usually has some char.
Burger King Whopper - cross section
The failing of the Whopper isn't in the meat or the bun but in the inconsistency with the freshness of the lettuce and the tomatoes. When they're fresh and plentiful, the Whopper is great, but when they're soggy, wilted, or sparingly used, the Whopper suffers severely.

With the local price of $3.59, I'd rather spring for a slightly more expensive Steakhouse XT or a much cheaper $1 Whopper Jr.

  1. I went to work at Burger King in 1971.
A Whopper, fries and a Coke cost 99 cents back then! (Heavy sigh)
Whoever put that Whopper together needs retraining.
Still my favorite burger joint though.

  4. Avoid the CALIFORNIA WHOPPER - it has the most tasteless guacamole ever!

  5. Here in Norway a Whopper with soda and fries cost $20. I don't know how restaurants in USA can make money with how cheap it is there.

  6. They make money because labor and food are cheap here. I'm going to guess your fast food employees get paid a fair bit more and some ingredients have to be imported with tariffs.
