Review: Burger King - Bacon and Cheddar BK Topper

Burger King's limited time Bacon and Cheddar BK Topper with made with a 3.2 ounce flame-grilled beef patty, thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon, a slice of cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickles on a sesame seed bun.

I picked one up for $1.99 at my local BK restaurant.

If the Bacon and Cheddar BK Topper is meant to highlight their switch to a thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon then they've succeeded as the bacon featured prominently in my BK Topper; it added a bit of smokiness and a satisfyingly thick, bacon-y crunch.

But that bacon goodness was a bit marred by too much saucing. As you'll notice in the pictures, whoever prepared my burger went a little out-of-control with the sauce gun. The ketchup in particular was excessive. I'm surprised the bacon stayed crispy.

The saltiness level was a bit high with the pickles (which were substantial and crunchy), ketchup, mayo, and bacon altogether. It threw the burger a bit off kilter.

The cheddar cheese was slightly melted but not very cheddary; it's really closer to plain old American.

The beef was a good thickness and size and while not juicy was not as dry as the last time I had it.

Overall, there was a fair bit of good stuff in the Bacon and Cheddar BK Topper if only I didn't have to eat so many condiments to find it. I'd recommend trying it without the ketchup; just a dab of mayo and pickles is probably plenty enough. Less is more with this one. The bacon is top notch though; probably the best I've had at a major fast food chain.
