Review: Taco Bell - Double Chalupa

Taco Bell's Double Chalupa features an oversized, boat-like Chalupa shell filled with a double portion of seasoned ground beef (versus a regular Chalupa), shredded lettuce, diced tomato, reduced-fat sour cream, warm nacho cheese sauce, and shredded three cheese blend.

It goes for $3.49 (versus $2.69 for a regular Chalupa) but is also available as part of a Big Box combo along with a crunchy taco, Doritos Locos Taco, and a medium drink for $5.

There's not much in the way of newness with the Double Chalupa, it's essentially a giant Chalupa with the addition of nacho cheese sauce. Unsurprisingly, it tastes like a beefed up Chalupa.

On first look, I was worried there might not be all that much meat as it was hidden under the other ingredients. Biting into it assuaged my fears though and it was plenty beefy, especially towards the middle of shell.

Like the Chalupa Supreme, the shell offered a light, slightly-oily crispy crust paired with a pillowy crumb. The shell held together well for the most part but halfway through the back fell out of the "boat" and dumped a crunchy taco's worth of seasoned beef onto the box that the Chalupa came in.

The tomatoes, sour cream, lettuce, and shredded cheese are the same combo you find in Taco Bell's "Supreme" items (i.e. Taco Supreme, Gordita Supreme, Chalupa Supreme, etc.). As such, they'll seem very familiar to Taco Bell regulars and offer a classic combination of mild flavors and varied texture. The addition of nacho cheese sauce adds an extra but slight creamy, cheese depth.

Overall, Taco Bell's Double Chalupa is great if you like the regular Chalupa (as I do) as you more or less get twice the Chalupa for less than $1 more. It's an even better value with the $5 combo since  tacking on just a Doritos Locos Taco by itself will already cost you $1.69 extra. You can also get it with pickled jalapenos on top for no charge.
