Review: Starbucks - Ultra Caramel Frappuccino

Starbucks' Ultra Caramel Frappuccino features a bottom layer of sweet cold brew whipped cream and dark caramel sauce, layered with a blend of dark caramel sauce, Frappuccino Roast coffee, milk, and ice, and then crowned with yet more sweet cold brew whipped cream and dark caramel sauce.

It was $5.25 for a 16-oz Grande but I had a 50% off coupon from their mobile app.

I find Starbucks' regular Caramel Frappuccino to be way too sweet so I was worried that I'd feel the same about the Ultra version but the Ultra Caramel Frappuccino actually contains 7 grams less sugar (a teaspoon is granulated sugar is about 4 grams) than the regular Caramel Frappuccino and tasted as such.

The sweet cold brew whipped cream, which is whipped cream infused with cold brew coffee, dark caramel sauce, and white chocolate mocha sauce, delivered a highly enjoyable bittersweet flavor and the expected light but not quite fluffy texture. I would happily eat a cup of the new whipped cream by itself.

The dark caramel was very sweet and thick but was nicely contrasted by the surprisingly mild blended layer. The bitter notes of both also helped to balance out the sugary quality.

Taken altogether, Starbucks' Ultra Caramel Frappuccino might be the best Frappuccino I've tried. I really liked the varied bittersweet levels and textures of the different components, and especially liked the cold brew whipped cream.
