Review: Arby's - Smokehouse Beef Short Rib Sandwich

Arby's Smokehouse Beef Short Rib Sandwich features smoked, pulled beef short ribs, crispy-fried onions, cheddar, and BBQ sauce on Texas toast.

I bought one for $6.29.

The short ribs had a greasy, lingering mouthfeel, although part of that could have been from the thoroughly melted cheddar cheese, which also served as a glue to keep many-a-stray strand of beef from escaping from the sandwich. Beyond the oily feeling, the ribs were relatively tender but very smoky. The cheddar cheese was very mild.

The Texas toast was more just like normal toast. It was not buttery or particularly thick.

There was way too much barbecue sauce (not in the sense that it was spilling all over the place but more in that it was the main flavor of the sandwich) and it was mostly sweet and smoky, but had front note of tanginess. While I imagine it might vary with location, you may wish to ask for the sauce on the side.

The crispy-fried onions were the only component that managed to hold up well against the barbecue sauce and offered the occasional crispy bit as well as notes of charred onion.

Overall, Arby's Smokehouse Beef Short Rib Sandwich was mostly a miss for me. Both the short ribs and the Texas toast weren't quite up to snuff and, with the excessive barbecue sauce, any meat could have stood in for the short ribs.
