Review: McDonald's - Apple Fritter

McDonald's Apple Fritter is a fried fritter donut with cinnamon and apples, drizzled with a sweet glaze icing.

I bought one for $2.39, which is a bit on the pricey side as an apple fritter at a nearby Dunkin' is $2.09, while a local donut chain sells apple fritters for $1.85.

Rather than a dried glaze, my particular Apple Fritter came with a melted, sticky glaze that felt similar to a donut you might get from the supermarket, especially if it were wrapped in plastic. It didn't affect the taste but the texture on the outside was sticky and overly moist.

Like a lot of supermarket sliced bread, the donut itself was soft from crumb to crust. It's a fair bit denser though and just touch too firm. Fortunately, it turned out a lot better after a 6 second run in the microwave as the heat softened it and gave it the right amount of chew. While the ingredients lists "dried apples," they weren't detectable in terms of texture. Flavor-wise, the donut delivered a mellow and pleasant apple flavor with a light touch of cinnamon.

Taken altogether, McDonald's Apple Fritter didn't feel much different than a packaged apple fritter from the supermarket. It's nice warmed up but largely forgettable otherwise. It's a curious choice for a menu item given a similar but better flavor profile, more varied texture, and cheaper pricing from their apple pie (plus apples you can taste and feel).
