Review: Banquet - Mega Double Stuffed Pepperoni Pizza

Banquet's Mega Double Stuffed Pepperoni Pizza features "two layers of crust stuffed with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and reduced fat pepperoni."

A 13-oz box includes 2 slices for $3.99 on sale (the regular price was $5.49).

The pizza slices didn't look all that great frozen and looked even worst out of the microwave. I had things that didn't look great but still tasted good. However, this wasn't one of those things.

The crust here was an odd affair that was both crunchy and chewy but so flattened that it felt like the same part was somehow crunchy and chewy at the same time. Additionally, it was also quite dry. It brought to mind the crust of a Totino's Party Pizza, which I like, but flattened so that there were very few air pockets in the baked crust. So instead of a flaky, layered effect, it was more like a overly-baked, poorly-made lavash.

While the box reads, "mozzarella cheese" on the front, the Mega Double Stuffed Pepperoni Pizza actually comes with a combination of mozzarella cheese substitute and mozzarella cheese and the scale tips heavily towards the former as the mozzarella cheese is in the "contains less than 2%" portion of the ingredients. The result was a lack of gooey-ness and stretch to the cheese as well as a general lack of creaminess, richness, and plain cheesiness to the pizza.

The pizza slices didn't looked all that stuffed on inspection but they managed to fit a good amount of diced pepperoni in there for a slightly spicy, salty, greasy, meaty quality in most bites. The pepperoni actually went almost to the crust edge--there was just a slight but sturdy hinge of dough that held it together. Unfortunately, for all the abundance of pepperoni, there was lack of cheese and sauce in the middle, which made it feel less pizza-like. Additionally, there wasn't any pepperoni on top, which could have added extra texture.

The pizza sauce was fairly plain and thick with an odd tanginess.

Overall, Banquet's Mega Double Stuffed Pepperoni Pizza was a miss for me. I didn't enjoy eating it and would place it as the worst frozen meal I've eaten from Banquet. Two Totino's Party Pizzas are about the same price and offer a similar combination but with a much better mix of flavors and textures (although I they seem to taste a little different now that they're rectangular).
