Review: Trader Joe's - Shiitake Mushroom Chicken

Trader Joe's Shiitake Mushroom Chicken features a frozen mix of marinated dark meat chicken, shiitake mushrooms, edamame, and green beans in a ginger soy sauce.

A 22-oz bag was $5.99.

This was pretty easy to prepare: you just heat the mix in a pan and then add sauce and heat some more.

It turned out pretty well. The chicken was bite-sized and tender with a nice, light, savory flavor. There was a good amount of chicken in comparison to the legumes and mushroom.

The shiitake mushrooms were super juicy when bitten into with a robust mushroom flavor. The edamame and green beans offered a contrasting flavor and held their texture well (i.e. they weren't mushy).

The sauce was thin but coated the chicken and legumes/mushrooms well and offered a pretty basic but enjoyable "Asian-style" sauce (the kind that underpins a number of stir-fry dishes) with a savory soy base and a hint of ginger.

Overall, Trader Joe's Shiitake Mushroom Chicken delivered a tasty, but somewhat generic Chinese-style chicken, mushroom, and veggie (but, interestingly, not veggies) option with a surprising dose of juicy mushroom flavor.
