Review: McDonald's - Cheeseburger

McDonald's Cheeseburger is, for better or worse, really (with McDonald's Hamburger) the original modern fast food burger made quickly in an assembly line process for a uniform, profitable product. The formula remains simple: a beef patty, American cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard on a soft hamburger bun.

The price seems to vary quite a bit and fluctuates around $1 (I was quoted a price of 98 cents at my local McDonald's but they also offer two for $1.79 under normal menu pricing). In some markets, it actually costs more than a McDouble (which only differs in that it contains an extra beef patty).

I've always preferred McDonald's Hamburger to their Cheeseburger, the flavor is mostly the same but the American just overpowers the relatively small and thin beef patty and I feel more like I'm eating cheese than beef. One of the things I don't like about McDonald's cheese (as with a lot of fast food joints) is that it doesn't melt enough or rather they don't melt it enough because they don't cook the cheese on the patty but add it later instead.
Still, there's a simple ketchup-y appeal and a fair bit of history in every bite of the diminutive Cheeseburger and its counterpart.
As with the Hamburger, there's also lot of nostalgia and memories wrapped up in that wax paper. I remember when McDonald's had them for 39 cents back in high school and one of my friend pooled all our wrappers together to make a somewhat sizable ball of wax paper. Somehow one of the Cheeseburgers ended being sat on in the car but someone still ate it.

  1. I would guess they have them custom made by one of the same companies that make the buns in stores.

  2. I've tried to make these at home.  Very wide and flat patties, dehydrated onions (love them), and the cheapest pickles available.  I wonder where they get those buns, because I sure can't find anything close to them at the grocery store.

  3. Doesn't look very appetizing in these pictures. But it still makes me want one!! McD's cheeseburger never lets me down. Except this one time...when I got a salty patty.

  4. I love McDonald's cheeseburgers! The combo of meat and cheese and ketchup (I always order mine with ketchup only) is a wonderful flavor. I could eat several of these a day if they weren't so expensive compared to about 20 years ago.

  5. I agree with BE's review and comparison with the McDonald's hamburgers. If I want any cheese, I favor the McDouble for it's meat/cheese proportions. And where I live the McDouble is cheaper than this and the hamburger lol. Great reviews on 2 of the classics though!

  6. I love these so much (ashamed).  It's the reconstituted onions and super pickles.  Do any person know what the pickles are (they are probobly just for McD, I know) or how I can get some (short of working there, stealing, and getting fired).  I am very serious.

  7. Yum (shame).  How can I get those pickles?  Short of working there, stealing, getting fired, and possibly doing time.

  8. Wow...embarrassing double post.  Note how I repeated things, and judge accordingly.
