Frozen Friday: Hungry-Man - Popcorn Chicken with Spiced Rum BBQ Sauce

A new addition to the Hungry-Man line, Popcorn Chicken with Spiced Rum BBQ Sauce features popcorn-shaped, breaded chicken patties with a spiced rum barbecue sauce, mashed potatoes, and green beans.

Retail price is about $3.99 while sale price tends to be around $2.50 or less.

The popcorn chicken in this entrée were among the larger (if not largest) ones I've tried. Roughly the size of a small meatball (about a big bite's worth), they taste meatier than say KFC's Popcorn Chicken or even most chicken nuggets. They're of the mechanically separated variety.
Each popcorn chicken piece was breaded in standard frozen food fashion but manage to avoid being soggy for the most part despite microwave cooking. They were actually relatively crisp.

The Spiced Rum was pretty sweet for a BBQ sauce and rather strong with hints of cinnamon. I used it very sparingly and you can attribute most of the sugar in the entrée to it. A little bit of it goes a pretty long way but they actually give you quite a bit; more than enough... way more than enough.
The green beans and potatoes were standard frozen food, nothing notable but nothing bad either.

I really enjoyed Hungry-Man's Popcorn Chicken, they're nice and meaty and are quite filling.

  2. Spiced Rum BBQ sauce does sound pretty weird... and it's not that I don't like spiced rum once in a while! That being said, if the chicken's good, that's really what matters. I'd just use my own BBQ sauce. Great review, I haven't tried this one yet.

  4. I know right, the bars I go to serve flavored vodka sauce and shrimp... kidding of course, but you make a good point. I still don't really care if it's good frozen chicken though, they could call it high security prison favorites for all I care. :)
