Review: Del Taco - Crispy Chicken Strips

Del Taco's Crispy Chicken Strips features crispy-fried boneless chicken breast strips with black pepper.

I bought them as part of the 3-Piece Crispy Chicken & Fries Box for $4, which includes three chicken strips, crinkle-cut fries, and a choice of dipping sauce for $4 and chose chipotle sauce for dipping.

Rather than cut strips of chicken, these appear to be formed strips of ground meat as they have that smoother texture and were fairly moist.

The breading on the outside offered enough for a thin, slightly grainy coat all around. It was only sporadically crispy, which made them feel a bit like school cafeteria chicken strips or something you might bake at home.

Flavor-wise, the chicken strips were quite neutral, which is ideal for dipping but a little plain otherwise with just salt, chicken, and just a hint of black pepper. Fortunately, the chipotle sauce offered up a nice, tasty combination of smoky, creamy, sweet, salty, and savory that was somewhat reminiscent of the special sauce at Raising Cane's. It also went well with the fries, which were crisp and not too salty.

Overall, Del Taco's Crispy Chicken Strips fall upon the low-end of the fast food chicken strip spectrum. They're pretty plain and not all that crispy but maybe . Still, the $4 combo is plenty cheap, filling, and convenient. Also, they might hit the spot if you're feeling a bit nostalgic for the school cafeteria.
