Review: McDonald's Spicy Chicken McNuggets

McDonald's Spicy Chicken McNuggets feature white meat chicken nuggets with a tempura coating made with both cayenne and chili peppers.

I paid $2 for a 6-piece order (and got an extra 6-piece order of regular Chicken McNuggets for free with an offer in the app).

You might have guessed, but these don't really taste or feel different from regular Chicken McNuggets. You get the same crispy, slightly flaky crust and finely ground, slightly squishy chicken interior. It might have been a touch more flavorful and just slightly more flaky, but it could have just been the heat accenting the flavor and a more freshly fried batch than the regular Chicken McNuggets that I got. It's hard to say either way, although the spicy ones definitely looked flakier.

The spicy heat was mild-to-medium and spread out with a decent tingle but didn't have much staying power.

I went with the new Mighty Hot Sauce, which is meant to accompany the new nuggets and features "a blend of crushed red pepper and spicy chilis, balanced with savory garlic and a hint of sweetness." If you want a decent amount of heat, the Mighty Hot Sauce is more than happy to provide it. The sauce offers a solid medium heat, a vinegary tang rounded out by a light fruity note (from apricots according to the ingredients), and a touch of sweetness. I didn't pick up much in the way of garlic.

When it comes down to it, McDonald's Spicy Chicken McNuggets are good for everything you get from a regular Chicken McNugget but with a spicy kick, which is probably a good thing as it might not taste like a Chicken McNugget otherwise. The sauce is a little too vinegar-heavy for my liking but shouldn't be too jarring for fans of Tabasco and the like, as it does offer some twists with the sweet and fruit notes.
