Review: Wendy's - Classic Chicken Sandwich

Wendy's Classic Chicken Sandwich features the new Classic chicken filet (which replaces the Homestyle chicken filet), which the chain purports to be crispier, juicier, and more flavorful than the outgoing filet. The new filet is joined by mayo, tomato, lettuce, and pickles on a toasted premium bun.

The sandwich goes for $5.29 at my local Wendy's.

The new fried chicken filet looked a bit smooth for fried chicken but had a surprisingly crispiness that held up against the moisture of the mayo, lettuce, pickles, and tomato from start to finish. The chicken inside was decently tender and fairly juicy. While not particularly thick as far as fast food fried chicken sandwiches go, the new filet had really nice bun coverage so that there weren't any notable bread-only bites unless the chicken slid out. That being said, the previous version didn't suffer in bun coverage either.

Flavor-wise, the new fried chicken filet offered an enjoyable, lightly seasoned flavor that I wouldn't mind eating by itself. The taste was light enough for dipping but with enough punch to go without. The mayo was just a touch heavy in application but the chicken held its own in both crunch and flavor.

The produce has been a mixed bag in the two times I've tried the sandwich. The first time, it came with about four pickle slices, one sheet of leaf lettuce, and one slice of tomato. The second time, there were no pickles, one leaf of iceberg lettuce, and one slice of tomato (My local Wendy's seems to be having a lettuce problem--I also had an order this month where the two sandwiches I received had no lettuce at all).

The pickles were the same as you get on Wendy's burgers and fairly generic as far as fast food pickles go, which is to say that they were mostly sour with a decent crunch but did not offer much otherwise. The lone lettuce seemed pointless as it wilted pretty quickly in both instances with little to show for it. The tomato fared a little better but not by much.

The bun was almost overly soft and squishy but didn't threaten to fall apart. It's a touch richer than their Jr. buns.

Overall, Wendy's Classic Chicken Sandwich turned out a solid effort. The new chicken filet was good for a slightly more delicate, less craggy crunch versus the previous filet that I quite liked. It's supporting cast was a little weak though.
