Review: McDonald's - Crispy Chicken Sandwich

McDonald's Crispy Chicken Sandwich features a new "southern-style" crispy chicken filet served with crinkle-cut pickles on a toasted, buttered potato roll.

I paid $4.59 for one. As far as prices go, McDonald's Crispy Chicken Sandwich is pricier than either Chick-fil-A ($4.29 in my area) and Popeyes ($3.99).

Of all of Chick-fil-A's competitors, McDonald's seems like the one who's been at it the longest as far as trying to do their take on a southern-style chicken sandwich. Their attempts go as far back as their Southern Style Chicken Sandwich in 2008 and, more recently, with the value-priced Classic Chicken Sandwich. For this sandwich, they went with the same foil bag packaging that Chick-fil-A is known for and that chain's like Popeyes and Jack in the Box have copied for their own chicken sandwiches.

The skins on the pickles were a little chewy and didn't want to break as I bit into them. Also, my pickles were not crinkle-cut, and I wonder if they used the wrong pickles (or didn't have the right ones available). They didn't taste any different from your run-of-the-mill fast food pickle.

McDonald's kept it light and slightly on the airy side for the batter/breading, but it still managed to stay crispy and adhered nicely to the chicken filet. There was a light but definite seasoned flavor and just the barest touch of spicy heat.

Underneath the breading, the chicken was thick, juicy, and tender. It was also remarkably even for a chicken filet. Usually, there's like a tapered end and some thin parts here and there. I would guess they filled in any gaps with smaller cuts of chicken, as there's still the whole chicken texture, but maybe they just pounded a big filet until it hit the right shape?

The bun was super soft and molded to the chicken when I picked it up. There wasn't any slippage as I ate (no escaping chicken!). The bun was squishy soft but resilient enough not to feel like it was going to disintegrate or that one of my fingers might poke through to the chicken.

I didn't really detect the butter much. Maybe it melted into the breading?

When it comes down to it, McDonald's did a really good job with their latest attempt at a Chick-fil-A-type chicken sandwich. Except for the lackluster pickles, the few components were very enjoyable, especially the ridiculously thick and even chicken filet.
