Review: Taco Bell - Quesalupa (2021)

Taco Bell's Quesalupa promises 50 percent more melted pepper jack and mozzarella cheese inside its shell for 2021. The rest of the Quesalupa remains the same with a filling of seasoned beef, lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, and reduced fat sour cream.

I bought one for $3.69.

It's been about 5 years since I first reviewed the Quesalupa and while my memory is a little fuzzy, my mouth and previous photos tell me the cheese content inside the current Quesalupa's shell didn't feel any more cheesier than before. There still wasn't an even layer of cheese throughout the shell (in fact, there were broad swaths of bare patches). I'm not sure if these are shipped frozen to each location or if they're filled with cheese in restaurant, but it didn't turn out very cheesy.

The cheese that was there was melted at one point but had cooled enough so that it didn't ooze or stretch. I don't live that far from my nearest Taco Bell (less than a 10-minute drive) and their quesadilla fares well enough. Maybe ditching the cold filling ingredients might make for better heat retention and a better overall product?

The filling offered the a familiar combination of seasoned ground beef, lettuce, shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, and reduced fat sour cream that you'll find in a great number of both regular and limited-time Taco Bell menu items.

On this occasion, the beef was fairly evenly distributed, the lettuce was okay (there were some yellowing pieces but still some fresh crunch), the tomatoes were poor (pale and flavorless), the shredded cheese was actually a little melted, and the sour cream was judiciously applied.

Overall, Taco Bell's cheesier Quesalupa was a disappointment for me on the cheesier front. I love the concept of a cheesy, oozy and crispy shell but the execution has been a mixed bag for me on the times I've tried it. Sometimes, the cheese is warm and sometimes it's just a solid mass. On the plus side, at it's worse, it still tastes like a Chalupa Supreme, which I generally like.
