Review: McDonald's - Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich

McDonald's Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich features a new crispy-fried chicken filet, crinkle-cut pickles, and spicy pepper sauce on a toasted potato bun.

I picked one up for $4.79.

As with the regular Crispy Chicken Sandwich, the chicken delivered edge-to-edge bun coverage. It wasn't as ridiculously thick as before but there was a good thickness, juiciness, flavor, and crispiness to it. The crust/breading was light but not flaky (or grainy) and the seasoning to the filet had a Chick-fil-A flavor that was nice enough to eat on its own.

The mayo-based sauce was both quite spicy and tangy. The spicy heat was enough to induce my nose to run but not so much that I couldn't feel my tongue. The tang veered a bit too much into hot sauce territory and rendered the sourness of the pickles a bit redundant.

The pickles (I received the proper crinkle-cut ones on this visit) offered a much heartier crunch and flavor versus the chain's regular pickles.

The bun was less soft than my previous experience and suffered a bit visually (it was wrinkled like your skin when you bathe/shower for too long) from sitting in its own steam in the foil bag.

Overall, McDonald's Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich turned out pretty well with enjoyable flavors and textures. It's the spiciest permanent sandwich that McDonald's has ever offered that I can remember (they might have had some limited-time sandwiches that were just as spicy) and a nice option to have if you're looking for some heat.
