Review: Wienerschnitzel - Chili Cheese Dog

Wienerschnitzel Chili Cheese Dog top view
Probably the most well known item at Wienerschnitzel, the Chili Cheese Dog features a regular size hot dog and bun topped with cheese and chili for $1.69.

While I understand that it has its share of supporters, I'm not a big fan of Wienerschnitzel's trademark chili. It's too watery, salty, and doesn't have much subtlety, depth, or even sweetness. It's pretty much a liquid with little sad bits of ground meat floating about.

I would rather get one of their plain hot dog with ketchup for one of their 79 cent Corn Dogs. I like 7-Eleven chili cheese dogs better, especially since you build it yourself with a fair selection of condiments for roughly the same price.

Wienerschnitzel's not all bad though. My only real complaint is with the chili. The bun is steamed and pillow soft. The cheese is standard American but melted and gooey, but could have been better distributed. The hot dog is run of the mill and boiled, but some people like it that way.

  1. I think you're right to an extent. My experience is that the chili is usually a little watery, but there is some variation. I think it's seasoned very well though, it has just enough spice. It goes great with hot dogs and fries. On the fries, with the cheese it doesn't seem so watery. I've always been a fan.

That being said, it's true that Wienerschnitzel chili probably wouldn't be very good on its own. It's almost more of a sauce to me, especially on the hot dogs. I still say they have great chili dogs though, especially for cheap fast food.

  2. Their chili can actually taste really good. I've had Wienerschniztel from 2 places..One has very watery/salty-ish chili and the other had chili with tons of meat and it was thick. The thick one was soo satisfying. After eating only 1 order of chili cheese fries I was so satisfied and full. The quality is usually based on who runs the place. This is usually true of any franchise...sometimes the owners are cheap and ruin the quality of the food

  3. This review is an outrage! I have never had a better chili-cheese dog or burger than at Wienerschnitzel, and it's because of, not in spite of, the chili. It's not the type of chili that you'll eat from a bowl in front of a campfire, mind you... This is chili specifically engineered to it's task.

Q - Moving forward, I'll have to watch for your reviews and ensure I take them with a grain of salt. Very disappointing.

  4. Haha... We can't agree on everything you know. Who know? Maybe Wienerschnitzel chili is different in California. All I know is, I only know one of my friends who actually likes it.

  5. The Schnitzel chili is not good.. review is spot on. And Shane, if Wienerschnitzel is the "best" you've ever had, well, that's just sad.

  6. Do they have cheese under the hot dog as well, or was that small dabble on top it? Never had Winerschnitzel, but if that's what it looks (in regards to amount of cheese for a "chili cheese dog") like I might not every try it.

On another note, Shane everyone can't agree. I've disagreed with some of the reviews, but I know it's because I probably have different tastes. I love food some of my friends hate, and vice versa. Just the way life is.

  7. Yup, you can see it in the third pic.

At the very least, it's pretty cheap if you want to try it just to satisfy curiosity.
