Frozen Friday: Totino's - Party Pizza

Totino's Party Pizza is the budget option for a quick frozen pizza. The most common varieties are Cheese, Pepperoni, Sausage, and Combination (Pepperoni and Sausage). I usually go for the Pepperoni (the classic) or the Combination (for variety) and picked them up on sale for around $1 (they retail for $1.99).

On this occasion I picked up the Pepperoni Pizza. Totino's Pizzas have a very distinctive crust, it's crisp but full of air pockets resulting in an airy, crisp but not crunchy texture. You're supposed to cook them in an oven but my mom and grandmother always cooked these in a pan when I was growing up and I have continued to do so. I think the contact of the crust and the pan make for a crisper crust but I don't know for sure.
The crust really makes the pizza for Totino's. The cheese is kinda fake and the pepperoni is diced and mild. The sauce is almost non-existent; like they painted the crust with a paper-thin layer. It feels more like an hors d'oeurve than most pizza especially when you cut it into small pieces for sharing. But it works and has a distinctive taste and texture that makes me think "Totino's."
While not exactly quality, it's good, cheap eats and apparently "America's Best Selling Frozen Pizza."

  1. Dude. I was browsing around, kinda bored and what not, and thought "Hey, Frozen Friday on BE."

Yep, I had one of these for dinner a few hours back.

Ha, well, these are very good for the value, I end up with them when they are $1 or a quarter more. Always go for the supreme ones. Last time I had a house party I got a handful of the different ones and chopped them up. The crust is pretty decent; the toppings... average. For the price? One of the best pizza values.

  3. How do you cook it in a pan? And yep, I grew up eating these too. Always the combination and they always sell 4 for $5 at the grocery stores here.

  4. Just have to find a big enough pan, turn it on low heat and be sure to cover it. It's like a mini-oven!

  5. I always cook my frozen pizzas on a pan. The last time I tried to cook it directly on the rack I set off my smoke detector...

  6. I believe Totino's pizzas are by far the best frozen pizzas around! They should make them bigger as I usually want more after eating either a cheese or triple cheese. Also my local Woodman's has Totino's pizzas for $1.29 each. And they also have pizzas with round pepperoni pieces.

  7. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Jeno's Pizza is the smaller variant of Totino's. Pizza is something I could never really get into. Jeno's/Totino's is the sole exception though, primarily because of that crispy crust you've well described. I know I sound crazy but it's the best pizza I've ever eaten...

  8. Yum. Even though it's the budget option, it's definitely my fave! I would pick this over Digiorno's or CPK any day. I miss the old Jeno's boxes though. For some reason I just prefer it...might be nostalgic associations.

  10. Thanks to price inflation and wage deflation the local typical out-the-door price for Totino pizzas is around $1.25 to $1.50 with the very few sales letting them stampede out the door for a buck each.

Needing to cut carbohydrates so that my decrepit aging carcass can continue sucking in oxygen for awhile longer I have had to lose weight and take greater care what I toss down my gullet.

    Sniff.

However, when I was in my "glory days" I would add goodies to my Totino pizza.

Extra cheese, meat, whatever I had and it assisted in maximizing good taste.

  11. The cheese tastes kinda fake because it is actually fake. Check the box, it says 'mozarella cheese substitute.' These things also pack a healthy dose of trans fat.

Totino's/General Mills should be ashamed of targeting kids with their ads, but as long as there's ignorant parents out there willing to buy this plastic food, the foodcorps will keep pushing it.

  12. That's funny, I heard Totino's was big on the trans fats, but after seeing so much positive feedback here, I figured maybe they changed with everybody else. Too bad, this looks like a good value. I love DiGiorno's and Tombstone already, so I guess I'll stick with those.
