Review: Tastykake - Minis Cupcakes

Tastykake Minis are bite-sized versions of their regular cupcakes. They're available in three flavors: Peanut Butter, Swirly (Chocolate), and Koffee Kake.

A 12-oz box includes eight packets of three mini cupcakes each and goes for $3.99, but I received these courtesy of Tastykake.

The Peanut Butter Minis Cupcakes feature chocolate cupcakes filled with peanut butter creme, topped with peanut butter icing made with Reese's peanut butter and a chocolate icing squiggle (they call it "Swirly").

The Swirly Minis Cupcakes is similar to a Hostess Chocolate Cupcake and consist of creme-filled chocolate cupcakes made with Hershey's cocoa, filled with creme filling, and topped with chocolate icing plus a white icing squiggle.

The Koffee Kake Minis Cupcakes are crumb-covered, creme-filled, coffee cake cupcakes.

To start, these things are tiny. You can probably toss them up and catch them in your mouth (I can't though because I'm just not talented like that).

The cake portion was remarkably moist without being overly oily. The chocolate cake was airy and fluffy, while the coffee cake was denser and just slightly a little too firm.

The Peanut Butter ones are my favorite of the bunch; the peanut butter creme and icing complement the chocolate cake nicely, combining for a richness that I've never come across in a packaged snack cake. The creme had a full peanut buttery goodness to it. The squiggle on top had a soft, almost liquid quality and was chocolaty rather than cocoa-y.

The Swirly Minis offer an enjoyable chocolate-chocolate-vanilla combo. The cake was very chocolaty, while the icing was less so and more sweet. I liked that the icing didn't have a waxen feel to it. Whatever machine they used to decorate the cupcake with the white icing might be in need of some calibration though; the swirled line skirted the edge of all three cupcakes in a number of packets (the Peanut Butter Minis were centered nicely though).

The Koffee Kake Minis weren't topped with "crumb" so much as they were covered with over-sized cinnamon sprinkles. It's a bit of a different texture than the norm but contributed the expected cinnamon-sugar taste. The cake had that plain, slightly vanilla taste.

Overall, Tastykake's Minis were really good. I found them better than my recollection of their regular cupcakes. As I mentioned, the Peanut Butter are my hands down favorite of the three (followed by Swirly and then Koffee Kake).
