Review: Jack in the Box - Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Jack in the Box's Spicy Chicken Sandwich is very similar to the Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich and features a spicy, crispy filet, topped with lettuce, tomato, and their mayo-onion sauce on a sesame seed bun for $3.69 (compared to Wendy's $3.99).

Jack's Spicy Chicken Sandwich was a bit of an oddity for me. Yes, it was spicy... but at the same time, it lacked in other flavors. It was like they seasoned it with chili powder, a little salt and not much else. At the very least, they usually throw in a bit of garlic or onion powder but I didn't really taste any of that here. So yeah, it was kinda weird.
Beyond that, the rest of the ingredients were fairly standard; no surprises. The chicken was crunchy but overcooked and a bit dry as a result. It is an an actual breast filet but a bit thin on this occasion (I'm assuming chicken breast filets will vary in general).

Overall, this was a miss for me.

  1. I think I got this one for a late dinner (8ish?). I haven't eaten this before so it's entirely possible I got an under-seasoned batch but who knows?

    I do like the Chalupa!

  2. I've always liked Jack's more than Wendy's - the former has always been crispier and a little bit spicier, in my opinion.

  3. You've now given negative reviews to 2 out of 3 of my all time favorite fast food items, this and Wienerschnitzel's chili dog (my other favorite is taco bell chalupas, I think you like those at least). It's funny because other than Pizza Hut, I usually agree with you. I have to wonder, did you get this during peak lunch or dinner hours? They seem to do a way better job then, much fresher chicken. You're right about the size of the chicken too, it varies, so when it's bigger it's really good. I've had mediocre ones like yours too though.

  4. Actually I thought this chicken sandwich was also pretty ordinary, but on one occasion I got it with their cheese (the white one) and sans tomato. Voila! So much better! Ever since, this is the only thing I get at Jack in the Box. And honestly, on occasions when they have forgotten the cheese, I have gone back to get it replaced. (I now check it before I leave.) As for the chicken being too thin, I half agree. I mean it could be bigger, but for the sandwich it seems pretty proportionate. I find it a bit silly with those chicken sandwiches (like the hand breaded one at Carl's) where it seems like I'm eating a piece of fried chicken that for some reason came with a bun. Sometimes I'll get halfway though and the huge piece of chicken falls out so I eat it and the bun/lettuce separately. You don't have to do another review but maybe try it once with cheese.

  5. This is my favorite fast food item ever, no lettuce (soggy iceburg just ruins it) with extra mayo. I've had it so many times that I have experienced duds... some too small, once so tough it was inedible. I have noticed in the past 2 months the size and quality have seemes to be better than average. Hopefully that's not a fluke!
