Review: Taco Bell - Spicy & Crunchy Cheesy Core Burritos

Taco Bell's Cheesy Core Burritos feature a "core" of nacho cheese sauce and 3-cheese blend wrapped up in a flour tortilla, surrounded by seasoned ground beef, Latin rice, and reduced-fat sour cream, and red sauce and wrapped up into a burrito. Basically, each is a cheese burrito stuffed inside of a beef and rice burrito.

They come in two varieties: Spicy and Crunchy. I bought one of each for $1.99 a piece.

Both burritos had a really nice heft and were pretty filling for two bucks.

The Crunchy Cheesy Core Burrito comes with red tortilla strips mixed in with the cheesy center. The crunchy core turned out not-so-crunchy but added a chewy fried texture with just a bit of crispness here and there.

Beyond the tortilla strips, you get the extra creaminess from the cheesy core but any other distinguishing flavors were very mild.

The seasoned beef and rice provided a bulk of the flavor with the red sauce giving a mild zing and reasonable tang and the sour cream adding to that along with more creaminess. A surprising aspect to the core was that it made for a tighter wrap to the burrito. The tighter form factor held the various components in place more than usual and left less in the way of uneven bites of only one or two ingredients. The drawback of the core is that there's that much more tortilla to go around and you definitely notice it, especially at the ends of the burrito where you may find yourself just chewing on tortilla and only tortilla.

The Spicy Cheesy Core Burrito only differs from the Crunchy Cheesy Core in that the cheese shares the core with pickled jalapeno slices rather than tortilla strips.

They did not skimp on the jalapenos, which left my bites spiked with the taste of the jalapenos themselves, bursts of pickled sourness, and a medium amount of heat. I liked the jalapeno heat but the sourness was too much and overwhelmed the other ingredients. It left me feeling a bit like I was eating a spicy pickle burrito.

Overall, Taco Bell's Cheesy Core Burritos are fairly solid and good for fans of their regular burritos as they doesn't offer that much in the way of newness. The Crunchy version is definitely my preference over the Spicy version. I liked the heat but there were too many pickled jalapenos in proportion to everything else.
