Taco Bell Tests Mexican Crispy Chicken Pizza

Essentially a pizza with a crispy tortilla and a crispy chicken patty as the crust, Taco Bell dishes out the new Mexican Crispy Chicken Pizza as a test item in Columbus, OH.

The Mexican Pizza variant consists of the same crispy shell as you'll find on the Mexican Pizza spread with nacho cheese sauce and then topped with a crispy chicken patty, Mexican Pizza sauce, 3-cheese blend, and pico de gallo.

Basically, it's a Mexican Pizza with crispy chicken instead of seasoned beef and nacho cheese instead of beans. It bears a remarkable resemblance to KFC's Chizza, which has been making the rounds internationally (both KFC and Taco Bell are part of Yum! Brands, Inc.).

The price for the new variety of Mexican Pizza ranges from $3.49 to $3.99 (varying with location). It's also being offered in a combo along with a Crunchy Taco and large drink starting at 5.49.

The test runs through May 10, 2017.

I was able to try the Mexican Crispy Chicken Pizza at Taco Bell headquarters. The chicken is the same as you'd find on the Naked Chicken Chalupa except flattened out. The pico gives it a bit more zip than the plain tomatoes of the regular version. Between the chicken and the shell, there's a nice crunch but the overall flavor felt too familiar and I still prefer the original Mexican Pizza.
