Review: Bonchon - Korean BBQ Sauce Fried Chicken

Bonchon Korean BBQ Sauce Fried Chicken in a box.

Bonchon's Korean BBQ Sauce Fried Chicken features any of their Korean fried chicken options (wings, boneless, or strips) brushed with new Korean BBQ Sauce, which is described as a mix of "gochujang, rice vinegar, and brown sugar, with the flavors of garlic and sake balanced with sweet pear."

I paid $8.50 for three fried chicken drumsticks and a side of steamed rice.

Bonchon's Korean BBQ Sauce is fairly mild compared to their Spicy and Soy Garlic sauces. It offered a slightly funky gochujang (Korean red chili paste) base with a light sweetness and just a touch of tanginess and spicy heat. They actually brush the sauce on so that there's a thin, even coat on the entire drumstick. It wasn't all that salty so that I ended up eating the rice with something else.

The crust on the chicken was paper-thin but so crispy that it almost cracks everytime I bit into it.

However, the chicken inside, while tender and juicy, could have used some marinating or brining as it was a bit bland.

Overall, Bonchon's Korean BBQ Sauce Fried Chicken offered a nice but mellow flavor and a satisfying crunch but I prefer the chain's other punchier flavors.
