Review: McDonald's - Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich

McDonald's Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich features a chicken breast filet marinated and battered with buttermilk and a blend of spices including black pepper, garlic, and onion powder served with tomato, leaf lettuce, and mayonnaise on an artisan roll.

I got one for $4.79.

With the introduction of the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich, McDonald's continues the chicken overhaul that began with their recent Artisan Grilled Chicken. Their new crispy chicken is made with real buttermilk and boasts no added color.

My chicken filet seemed to be a bit overcooked. It was definitely crispier on the outside than I would have liked. My last few bites were mostly just crispy fried batter. However, the meat of the filet was reasonably tender. I didn't find myself fighting to tear the chicken apart while biting it. It was also almost exactly the size of the bun. Whole cuts of chicken tend to vary in size more considerably than ground beef patties, so I was happy to see this.

As far as flavor is concerned, I was satisfied with the Buttermilk Chicken. I really didn't notice any significance to it being made with real buttermilk. It's been awhile since I had a premium chicken sandwich from McDonald's but I don't recall the flavor being too drastically different from what's found here. It was well seasoned and left my mouth with a lingering combination of salt and pepper.

The toppings were nothing special, as to be expected from a basic chicken sandwich. My tomato was thick and juicy though and the lettuce was fresh and a little crisp. As you can tell from the cross-section photo, my sandwich was pretty heavy on the mayo. I'm not sure if they loaded it up because they were afraid my chicken would be dry or if that's just how much mayo they put on this sandwich normally, but in the future I may ask for light mayo or for it on the side to apply myself.

Overall, I was fine with McDonald's new Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich. The inclusion of buttermilk isn't a game changer by any means. However, the chicken maintained a good amount of flavor, which I certainly appreciated. I wouldn't be against having this filet on the Clubhouse or any future sandwiches the company decides to release.
