News: Subway Serves Breakfast Starting April 5, 2010

Subway Breakfast offerings
Subway Sandwiches formally throws its hat into the fast food breakfast arena starting April 5, 2010 when it begins serving breakfast at over 25,000 locations in North America.

The offerings basically consist of your typical breakfast fillings (eggs, omelet, sausage, steak, ham, bacon, cheese) inside your choice of breads (English muffin, any Subway bread, biscuit, and flatbread) although choices may vary with location.  Additionally, you'll be able to customize you sandwiches in the typical Subway fashion with any available veggies and condiments.

Healthier options include egg whites, whole wheat, and ham.

The price range is $1.75 to $2.25 for English muffin-sized sandwiches, $2 to $3.50 for a 6" sub or flatbread, and $4 to $6 for a footlong (if it's offered at all). The chain also serves Seattle's Best brewed coffee $1 to $2 varying with location.

Subway has also committed to eventually using 100% cage-free eggs.  That is eggs that are laid by hens that don't live in cages.  I'm not sure how they are cooking the eggs since Subway restaurants have neither a grill or fryer and there is generally no cooking beyond baking and microwaving.  I guess they do have those toaster ovens though.

Many Subway locations have already been serving breakfast for a while.  My local Subway has been serving breakfast for at least the last six months if not more.

Other big names that already serve breakfast include McDonald's, Burger King, Jack in the Box, and Carl's Jr./Hardee's.  Moreover, Wendy's and Taco Bell are considering the jump and have been testing breakfast offerings as well.

  2. I thought this already was? Or this is bigger extension of their existing breakfast menu?

  3. @katie: Haha, I already had heart-attack chili-cheese fries today from a place called the Hat today. Review forthcoming at some point.

@EatTravelEat: It's more of a nationwide rollout. They've had it in southern California for a while now as far as I know.

  5. I tried Subway breakfast recently because McDonalds had already stopped serving it. I don't remember what I had but I couldn't even finish it! Subpar at best. The good thing though is that you can customize your breakfast sandwich the same way you can customize the regular sandwiches at Subway using the same ingredients (though they've added some extra ingredients for breakfast of course). So maybe it's my own fault that the sandwich did not come out tasty.

  6. Oh, and their eggs seem pre-cooked and cold. Doesn't really look like they cook them on location. It's in the bar with the rest of their ingredients.
