Review: Subway - New Oven Crisp Chicken Sub

Subway's new Oven Crisp Chicken Sub promises crisp, breaded chicken without the frying and oil and is part of their Fresh Fit menu with less than 7 grams of fat per serving.

I picked up a footlong (that's two servings) for $6 at my local Subway. A six-inch was priced at $4.

So I guess the big question is: "Is it crisp?" Alas, no. It is not. The way Subway's Oven Crisp Chicken works is they have pre-cooked, breaded chicken patties in their prep area. When you order a Over Crisp Chicken sub, they pop the chicken into their toasted oven for a pre-set amount of time (about a minute or so) to heat it up and toast the breading a bit.
Unfortunately, while my chicken patties was warmed, it was not crispy at all although it did have a dry breadcrumb feel to it. The patties themselves appear to be formed with mechanically-separated chicken and are a bit lacking in the flavor department; you'll know your eating chicken but not much else. For formed chicken patties, they really should stretch them a little longer, I found that my first and last bites were just bread and veggies.

Seasoning was low to nonexistent as well and much of my sub's flavor was provided by honey mustard. I built mine pretty close to the picture but on 9-grain Honey Wheat along with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, salt and pepper, and honey mustard.
I have to say, I like the 9-grain Honey Wheat though; it's not the lowest calorie option for bread (you'd want to go with Italian or 9-grain Wheat for that) but it has a nice grainy texture to the crust and a bit of sweetness.

But as for the Oven Crisp Chicken, it really should be just "Oven Chicken" if that. It might crisp up if they toasted if for longer but that would probably stretch the wait time quite a bit for customers. I guess you could always go home and pop the chicken in the toaster oven yourself but you really shouldn't have to. At the very least, I can say it tastes "healthy."

  1. I tried one of these yesterday and I know what you mean. Without any real seasoning on the meat the taste totally gets lost.

  6. The smallest toaster oven will claim a capacity of four slices. This is referring to the fact that four regular pieces of bread will fit within the oven.
