Review: Schlotzsky's BBQ Chicken & Jalapeno Pizza

Schlotzsky’s BBQ Chicken & Jalapeno Pizza features grilled chicken breast, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, BBQ sauce, red onion, and jalapeno on a seasoned sourdough crust.

A 10 inch pizza is $7.49 but I purchased one with a gift card courtesy of Schlotzsky’s.

Schlotzsky’s gourmet pizzas differ from just about any other pizza I’ve had in that they come on the same signature sourdough bread as their sandwiches. The bread makes for a crisp crust on the outside but feels more spongy on the inside. It’s definitely a noticeable difference to the overall texture of a slice.

The strongest presence on my tongue, slice after slicem were the BBQ sauce and jalapenos. The sauce was more sweet than smoky. Without it, the chicken pieces themselves were pretty bland. It would have been nice if they could have at least filled the role of some saltiness on this pizza, but that taste was missing.

The jalapeños popped when I bit into them and had a good amount of heat to them, but not enough to ruin the other flavors. I appreciated what tasted like fresh onions hidden under all the cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. They were actually more apparent than I expected. The cheddar itself didn’t seem to be particularly sharp or aged but still fit well with the other, less conventional, pizza toppings.

Overall, Schlotzsky’s BBQ Chicken & Jalapeño pizza didn’t deliver anything especially interesting but avoids falling flat. I would have liked something salty, perhaps bacon, to round out the flavors. At $7.49, I wouldn’t be opposed to trying one of their other gourmet pizzas as I wasn’t even able to finish this one in a single sitting.
