Review: Tastykake - Butterscotch Krimpets

Tastykake's Butterscotch Krimpets feature rectangular sponge cakes with butterscotch icing.

I bought a 12-oz box for $3.69. There are six packs of two cakes each per box.

Tastykake makes filled versions, but it's only recently that the brand arrived here in my area and I've only seen the plain versions so far.

For a snack cake, the cake portion was decently moist with a dense but spongy texture like that of an angel food cake. It's lightly sweet with a slight note of vanilla. Compared to a Twinkie, it's not as airy but still very light. It's also not as sticky.

The icing is more buttercream than like butterscotch. It lacked that brown sugar note to it. Still, it was actually like cake frosting rather than some sort of waxen fondant and is probably the best frosting/icing I've come across in a packaged snack cake.

Overall, Tastykake's Butterscotch Krimpets were highly enjoyable. Both the cake and the icing stood above from what I've encountered so far with snack cakes. Basically, they don't taste like a packaged snack cake in the best possible way.
