Review: Jack in the Box - Blue Cheese & Bacon Ribeye Burger

Jack in the Box's Blue Cheese & Bacon Ribeye Burger features a ribeye beef patty, crumbled blue cheese, blue cheese sauce, grilled onions, and hickory-smoked bacon on a toasted potato bun.

I got my Blue Cheese & Bacon Ribeye Burger using a 2 for $5 coupon, but it normally costs $5.79 at my local Jack in the Box.

Typically, I find that blue cheese served at fast food restaurants is generally just salty and lacks the depth and bitterness that gives blue cheese its characteristic funk. I was pleasantly surprised at the bitterness whenever I encountered one of the many blue cheese crumbles on my burger. The blue cheese sauce is milder but offers a salty and savory creaminess to the burger. Combined, the sauce and crumbles firmly deliver on the blue cheese front.

Because of the richness and strength of the blue cheese, however, the other ingredients in the Blue Cheese & Bacon Ribeye Burger took something of a back seat. The bacon, while crunchy, lightly smoky, and delicious on its own, mostly just lent an extra dose of salt when eaten with the rest of the burger. Likewise, the grilled onions offered more in terms of texture and just a touch of sweetness.

What was perhaps most disappointing for me was how much the blue cheese masked the delicious flavor of the ribeye beef patty, which itself is intense and fatty. It was difficult to differentiate between the richness of the sauce/cheese and the richness of the juicy burger patty. It was certainly a delicious eating experience, but I almost feel like the ribeye beef patty was wasted on this burger; I think I would have enjoyed it just as much if it was a normal beef patty.

Overall, the Blue Cheese & Bacon Ribeye Burger makes for decadent eating that ought to satisfy a blue cheese craving. However, the ribeye patty gets lost in this LTO (limited-time offer) because the general richness of the other ingredients overpowers the meat quality. The All-American Ribeye Burger is a better iteration that really showcases the flavorful unctuousness of the ribeye patty in contrast to the fresh produce.
