Review: Wendy's - S'Awesome Classic Cheeseburger

Wendy's S'Awesome Classic cheeseburger features a beef patty, three strips of applewood-smoked bacon, American cheese, crinkle-cut pickles, onion, lettuce, and Side of S'Awesome Sauce on a toasted bun.

I paid $5.49 for the single patty version (it's also available with two or three beef patties).

For the most part, the S'Awesome Classic turned out well as to quality of the ingredients if not always necessarily the amount. The beef was juicy, the bacon was crispy, the veggies were crisp and fresh, and the cheese was thoroughly melted. However, while the beef and bacon were substantial, they were contrasted by a single thin sheet of lettuce and just one ring of onion that I barely tasted.

The pickles were mild as far as fast food pickles go. They were lightly sour and not particularly sweet. Additionally, they were thicker than typical with a more substantial crunch to them.

With a name like the "S'Awesome Classic," you'd expect the sauce to be the glue that joins the various ingredients together but even with an even layer, the sauce came on in sporadic fleeting moments with hints of sweet, smoky, and tangy notes, plus an occasional light touch of heat. I found myself wishing it was just mayo for that solid savory richness.

When it comes down to it, Wendy's S'Awesome Classic Cheeseburger was perfectly competent in the execution but curiously lacking in punch and excitement. In hindsight, I should have asked for a cup of Side of S'Awesome Sauce to dip the burger in so that it was more worth of its name.
