Review: Impossible Whopper vs. Regular Whopper

Burger King's Impossible Whopper features a flame-grilled, plant-based patty to go with the standard Whopper fixings of tomato, onion, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, and pickles on a toasted sesame seed bun. It's the same as a Whopper but with a different non-meat patty.

It goes for $6.59 at my local BK (compared to $6.19 for a regular Whopper) but I got both for $7 with an offer on their app (the Impossible Whopper is on the right in all pictures).

Visually, both patties are similar in appearance with the same grill marks and color but the Impossible Whopper patty noticeably held its shape better through cooking. It seems that the vegetarian protein doesn't contract as much as meat protein. Additionally, the Impossible patty was juicier, suggesting less water loss during cooking.

In terms of texture, the Impossible Whopper had a looser grind that yielded very little resistance on the initial bite but felt meaty enough when chewing. In comparison, the beef patty was noticeably denser and chewier.

The aroma of the Impossible patty was meaty and smoky but not quite beefy. It's close, though. Likewise, the taste was also meaty and smoky. Again, it's different from the beef patty but stays in the same ballpark.

Beyond the patties, the Whoppers were identical. The saucing was fairly well balanced without too much or too little mayo and ketchup. The vegetables weren't all that fresh but they weren't wilted either, which is pretty average for fast food. The onions stuck out for a considerable pungent bite.

Overall, Burger King's Impossible Whopper was enjoyable and I wouldn't mind getting it instead of a Whopper as it doesn't really lose out in any way (and doesn't cost all that much more).

If you're vegetarian, vegan, or the like, the Impossible Whopper patty is normally cooked on the same broiler as Burger King's chicken and beef. However, the Burger King website states, "For guests looking for a meat-free option, a non-broiler method of preparation is available upon request."
