Review: Krispy Kreme - Easy as Pie Donuts

Krispy Kreme's Easy as Pie Donuts feature a trio of donuts including the Dutch Apple Pie donut, Chocolate Kreme Pie donut, and Cherry Pie donut.

They go for $1.79 each in my area but I received these courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

The Dutch Apple Pie donut is a shell donut with apple pie filling, dipped in caramel icing, sprinkled with streusel topping, and hand‑decorated with an icing lattice. The donut was fairly sweet due to the caramel and streusel. The apple pie filling included a good amount of diced apple with a light tartness and a touch of cinnamon. Between the caramel, streusel, and apple pie filling there was a good balance of both flavors and texture. You get a thick apple pie filling with chunks, the thin and slightly hardened caramel icing, the crunch of the streusel, and the fluffiness of the donut.

The Chocolate Kreme Pie donut features a shell donut filled with chocolate Kreme, dipped in chocolate icing, and topped with a dollop of Kreme and mini chocolate chips. Of the three donuts, it was notably the sweetest and a bit too sweet for me. Also, it was the least interesting as chocolate is fairly well-represented on the menu already and there wasn't an acidity component to temper the sweetness as with the other two. That being said, the chocolate Kreme made for a nice stand-in for the filling of a chocolate cream pie with a nice chocolaty flavor to it. It's fairly thin as filling goes and occasionally threatened to drip out of the donut as I bit into it. Krispy Kreme's chocolate icing is heavy on the sugar and light on the chocolate, and so it was here. I'm really glad they did not decide to glaze these before icing them as they do for some other donuts.

The Cherry Pie donut consists of a shell donut topped with pie crust crumbles and a cherry filling, and then hand-decorated with an icing lattice. This one was my favorite of the bunch as well as the least sweet of the three. Spreading the filling on top gave it a bit of a jam-and-toast-type of feel and also ensured that I got some cherry in every bite. The pie crust added some crunch and a light sweetness. The lattice didn't really add much in the taste or texture department and seemed mostly there for looks. The cherry filling was a bit generic though and if I didn't know what it was, I would have guessed, "berry filling."

Taken altogether, Krispy Kreme's Easy as Pie Donuts were pretty good in my book. All three did a pretty good job of capturing some of the essence of their respective pies and I especially liked the Dutch Apple Pie and Cherry Pie donuts.
