Review: Subway - Meatball Pepperoni Sub

Subway's currently featured $5 Dollar Footlong, the Meatball Pepperoni seems a bit of a random pairing  but I guess both meats are Italian in origin. I had mines built toasted on Italian bread with provolone cheese and a sprinkling of Parmesan, oregano, and black pepper. In case you missed it, the Meatball Pepperoni is $5 for a footlong sub.

Subway's normal Meatball Marinara sub is a regular on their $5 Dollar Footlong value menu so you're really just getting the extra value of about six wide slices of pepperoni.

Meatball subs are usually pretty messy and Subway's version is no exception so be sure to grab some extra napkins. I was pleasantly surprised at how well Subway's Italian bread held up against the marinara sauce. I've had experience in the past with other meatball subs where the bread absorbs too much of the marinara and becomes a soggy mess in my hands. I thought the marinara might be too sweet or two salty but it was actually pleasant if a bit plainly seasoned.
The meatballs were actually quite big and very meaty although ground a bit too fine. This is definitely a sub for the meat and cheese crowd. The pepperoni was somewhat superfluous against the marinara; I didn't get much of that peppery pepperoni flavor since Subway's pepperoni isn't particularly strong or spicy in flavor. The cheese was there but I found myself wanting more; doubling up on cheese would definitely be my recommendation on this one.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Meatball Pepperoni but next time I'd forgo the pepperoni and the extra sodium that it brings and get some more cheese (and the extra sodium there) which is good for my wallet (though not for my sodium intake) since the Meatball Pepperoni Sub will only be $5 for so long and the Meatball Marinara is an everyday $5 Footlong.

  1. "I thought the marinara might be too sweet or two salty but it was actually pleasant if a bit plainly seasoned."...That is quite a lot of salt though, I worry about your health sometimes...To balance this out, eat a salad or 5! Haha.

  2. Haha, I worry too! I drink a lot of green tea to help a little. I did split the footlong for two meals but that's still way more than the daily recommended.
