Review: Jack in the Box - Chipotle Chicken Club

Jack in the Box's Chipotle Chicken Club offers something a little spicy as the weather heats up and features a battered and deep-fried spicy chicken filet, American cheese, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, and a chipotle sauce on toasted sourdough bread.

I bought the promotional $4.99 combo which came with the sandwich, small fries, and a 20-ounce drink.

To ensure spiciness in every bite, Jack in the Box spreads a thin layer of chipotle sauce on the top and bottom slices of sourdough.

I really enjoyed the sauce which is a smoky mayo with a deep spicy chili pepper flavor. Usually with chipotle sauces, you get smoky and spicy but not the flavor of chili peppers and I was surprised and elated to find it here.

The sauce combines with the chicken filet to build a nice, cozy fire in your mouth. Nothing too uncomfortable but you'll feel it. That being said, I'm not sure a fried chicken filet was the best pairing for the sauce; I think the flavor might pair better with a beef patty instead.

The fried batter on my particular sandwich was rendered superfluous by the moisture from the other ingredients which left the once crisp batter soggy and moist. It's a shame as I would have liked the crunchiness. The chicken itself was a little dry and looked a bit like it had been pounded flat at some point.

Bacon coverage was pretty good and the bacon was crisp but not to the point of a satisfying crunch. Bacon was more subtle here; a sidekick to the chipotle and chicken. The lettuce and tomato were fairly fresh.

Overall, a good spicy option and not a bad deal for your buck. The sauce really makes the sandwich and gives an improved take on the typical chipotle sauce.
