Review: IHOP - Cinnamon Roll French Toast

IHOP's Cinnamon Roll French Toast features a warm cinnamon roll dipped in batter and grilled. It's then topped with cinnamon roll filling and drizzled with cream cheese icing.

You can get one of these for $4.99 by itself or as part of various combos.

Like the Red Velvet French Toast from the same limited-time "Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice" menu, the Cinnamon Roll French Toast doesn't really feel much like French Toast. While there's a bit of grease from frying, there's not much in the way of egg or batter and what little there is found itself overshadowed by the various cinnamon roll components. Still, there was a nice crispiness here and there.

While it didn't feel much like French toast, a pan-fried, warm cinnamon roll makes for some pretty enjoyable eating. While the batter didn't permeate the dough much (if at all), the cinnamon roll was soft, pliable, and very easy to cut into. It was neither mushy nor chewy.

There was a decent allotment of cinnamon roll filling where the two halves met. It actually wasn't all that sweet but delivered a strong note (and aroma) of cinnamon.

The cream cheese icing, on the other hand, was quite sweet but drizzled on in moderation. Beyond the sweetness, it provided a creamy richness.

Taken together, IHOP's Cinnamon Roll French Toast turned out quite well even if it didn't taste much like traditional French toast. I especially like the texture of the cinnamon roll and the taste of the cinnamon roll filling.
