Review: Kraft Singles Apple Pie

Kraft Singles Apple Pie just out of the oven.

The Kraft Singles Apple Pie is a 5" single-serve pie filled with hand-cut golden delicious apples mixed with cinnamon, nutmeg, light brown sugar, and Kraft Singles American cheese and topped with a slice of Kraft Singles American cheese.

It's available for a limited time from the Little Pie Company shop in New York City for $10.95 as well as via Goldbelly for nationwide delivery ($44.99 plus shipping for a package that includes a recipe card, two single 5" pies, and two 16-oz packages of Kraft Singles for melting). However, I received this courtesy of Kraft.

I've never had an apple pie topped with American cheese, or any cheese for that matter, and was a bit leery of trying this (but I've tried chili beer and soda-flavored hot sauce so why not?).

According to the instructions, the Kraft Singles Apple Pie needs to be left out to thaw in the fridge for a day, then out on the counter for 6 hours to reach room temperature, and then heated in the oven at 325 degrees for 20 minutes with a slice of American cheese (or more if you like).

Out of the oven, the top crust was nice and crispy with a bit of a sugar on it, and I was able to easily pop the pie right out of its tin. The bottom crust was a bit softer.

Insofar as the construction of the apple pie goes, Little Pie Company made an excellent one here. The apples inside were sizable but not unwieldy and were tender with a decent bite to them. There wasn't any gel-like sauce as filler and the crust was crispy, flaky, and buttery without being overly messy to eat.

When it came to the cheese, it was a bit weird for me. It wasn't a strong flavor as there's not all that much cheese to the pie but I was left with a hint of a somewhat mac-and-cheese taste, only with lightly-seasoned apples instead of pasta. It's not a surprise but the American cheese added a savory and salty element to the pie.

When it comes down to it, the Kraft Singles Apple Pie was a well made pie but American cheese in and on pie just isn't for me. The mild cheese flavor distracted from a very nice apple pie.
