Review: Sonic - Chicago Dog

Sonic's Chicago Dog is one of four new hot dogs that they just added to their menu. Each new hot dog is available for the introductory price of $1.99. The Chicago Dog comes with a pickle spear, relish, tomatoes, sport peppers, celery salt and mustard all served on warm poppy seed bun.

I've never had a Chicago Dog before so I don't really have a point of reference to tell you if Sonic's version tastes like one but it was very good.

It sounds like all the toppings might be overkill, especially with the amount of relish they piled on, but it actually wasn't and I was surprised that all the toppings combined into a tasty blend of seasoned nuanced flavors (the poppy seeds and celery salt are not to be overlooked). I think my pickle spear went missing so there could have been even more flavor!
The bun held up well to the moisture while remaining nice and soft and the tomatoes were pretty fresh. Watch out for those crisp sport peppers though; they pack a good amount of heat. Between Sonic's New York Dog and their Chicago Dog, the Chicago Dog just offers more flavor and more interest for me.

  3. Without the bun and only relish? That's not a Chicago dog. It's a relish dog, nothing more. Major hot dog eating fail there.

  12. This hot dog is fabulous.  I ate mine without the bun and only have the relish to cut the carb content.  I have had it several times with or without the bun and the flavors sparkle in your mouth!  Like eating a firecracker.....love, love, love the salty, crunchy, sweet and warmness of this hotdog!

  15.  As a native of Chicago, I can tell you that Ketchup is a "dirty word" when it comes to hot dogs. Many places in the city don't even stock the condiment. As far as Sonic's Chicago Dog goes, it's pretty darn close to the real thing but not quite the same. If you want the real deal...try Portillos or The Wieners Circle if you're ever up that way. Being temporarily stuck in KS, the Sonic version will do for now:-)

  16. Isn't pickle AND relish redundant?

  17. A little, but my pickle spear went mysteriously missing so I couldn't tell you how much a difference it would make.

  19. I would imagine there are many people who haven't had a chicago dog and review food... he was honest about it, so what's your point?

  20. Not everyone happens to live in Chicago, you know. I'd never even heard of a Chicago dog before this review.

  21. I find it hard to believe, a "Chicago Dog" is known the world over. You can find them in London, France, etc. They're as common as fries and cookies.
