Review: Sonic - Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog

Sonic's new, limited-time Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog features an all-beef hot dog inside of a pretzel bun, topped with chili and shredded cheese.

I picked one up for $2.69.

I've had varying experiences with Sonic's pretzel hot dog bun (one time I got one that was hard as a rock) but it was very good this time around. It was soft and dense with a light pretzel flavor and the requisite chewiness. It held up fairly well to the chili and didn't fall apart.

The hot dog was solid with a bit of smoky flavor.

The chili is a pretty thick meat chili, which is usually the case for hot dogs. It's nice but a bit of a one-noter. Notably, there's no heat to it.

The cheese came in a decent amount and was nicely melted but I felt like a little more would have balanced the chili a bit better.

As you can expect, between the chili and the hot dog, it gets pretty salty and I found myself wishing for the optional mustard and onions for bit more variety.

Overall, while I like Sonic's Chili Cheese Coney and I enjoyed the pretzel bun, it's not my preferred pairing as the chili covers up a lot of the pretzel bun's qualities. I like a regular hot dog bun for chili dogs and just a plain hot dog to better enjoy the pretzel bun.
