Review: Dunkin' Donuts - Tailgater Breakfast Sandwich

Dunkin' Donuts' Tailgater Breakfast Sandwich features a split smoked sausage covered in peppers, onions, and an ancho chipotle sauce, along with egg and cheese, all on a French roll.

I got one for $3.99.

Football season is underway and Dunkin' Donuts decided to join the craze with a twist on their smoked sausage sandwich. Anyone who's ever gone tailgating knows it calls for grilled foods, and sausage is one of the staples. By adding onions and peppers, Dunkin' Donuts invokes the traditional hot dog style of preparing sausage. But it's hard to get eggs and cheese on a hot dog bun so the French roll works as a solid substitute. It did a great job of keeping all the juices together in the sandwich and not on my lap.

The sausage itself was juicy. Smoked sausage obviously comes to the store frozen and ready to go so I can’t really commend the store for its taste but it was enjoyable. It had just a light smokiness and a strong saltiness.

The peppers and onions were sauteed before hand and warmed/toasted with the rest of the sandwich. The onion stood out in how it complimented the sausage. However, the inclusion of red pepper did add a little bite. Unfortunately, they were all cooked to the point of absolutely sogginess, and contained no pop or discernible texture at all. The chipotle sauce provided some heat to the combo, but not enough to bother most people.

Overall, Dunkin’ Donuts' Tailgater Breakfast Sandwich worked for me. The peppers and onions weren't particularly good on their own, but in combination with the smoked sausage, they successfully shake up a classic sandwich.
