Review: DiGiorno - Four Cheese Croissant Crust Pizza

DiGiorno's Four Cheese Croissant Crust Pizza features a "flaky and buttery" layered crust topped with mozzarella, parmesan, romano, and asiago cheeses.

I bought a 23.3-oz frozen Croissant Crust Pizza for $6.49 on sale (It's normally $6.99 so it wasn't much of a discount).

The pizza takes about 24 to 25 minutes at 400 degrees to bake in the oven. I cooked mine for 25 minutes and the cheese was fairly evenly browned and not so stretchy as a result (it was also mostly low-moisture, part-skim milk mozzarella, which doesn't melt as well as whole milk mozzarella and browns faster). The parmesan, romano, and asiago cheeses added some salt and toasted nutty notes to go with the creamy mozzarella.

The crust was fairly thick with a crispy, flaky surface, especially at the bottom where there was an even, crackly layer. It made for a bit of messy eating but was quite satisfying. It reminded me a little of a fancier take on a Totino's crust but only at the surface.

Inside, the crust was multi-layered, moist, and soft. It's not quite like the more delicate and numerous layers of a croissant though. It felt more like several layers of pizza dough. That feeling was reinforced by the lack of the promised buttery quality of the crust. Unlike Domino's Handmade Pan Pizza, Papa John's buttery garlic dipping sauce, and the Chicago-style deep-dish pizza from a local pizza chain, I had problems picking out any buttery notes here.

When it comes down to it, DiGiorno's Four Cheese Croissant Crust Pizza does enough in the texture department with the delicate, crispy, and flaky outer layer of the crust and multi-layered crumb to make you think of a croissant while still feeling a bit like pizza crust. However, it misses the opportunity to drive home the theme by suffering from a dearth of buttery flavor. Still, it's worth a try just for the novelty of the crackly crust.
