Review: Taco Bell - Grilled Cheese Burrito

Taco Bell's Grilled Cheese Burrito features seasoned beef, seasoned rice, three-cheese blend, crunchy red strips, chipotle sauce, nacho cheese sauce, and reduced fat sour cream, wrapped with a warm flour tortilla and topped with a layer of grilled/toasted cheese.

I bought one for $3.69.

The burrito came wrapped with wax paper as well as foil. From the looks of it, after rolling together the burrito, they layered shredded cheese on top, put wax paper over it, and gave it a turn in the grill-press until the cheese was browned. I'm guessing the wax paper keeps the cheese from sticking to the grill and doubles as a first wrapper for the burrito.

For the most part, the burrito portion tasted like many-a-Taco Bell burrito with a strong seasoned flavor from the beef, a touch of spice and smokiness from the chipotle sauce, creaminess from the cheese and sour cream, and just a bit of crunch from the red tortilla strips.

Normally, an extra portion of melted three-cheese blend from Taco Bell wouldn't add that much to the burrito as their cheese is really mild. However, the nice, fairly even browning of the cheese added a bit of that burnt cheese sharpness as well as an extra (and novel) savory quality that was very much welcomed. It also helped that the melted cheese layer was pretty thick and the seared quality cut through the other flavors without being overpowering.

Texture-wise, the browning gave the burrito a second skin that I felt pretty neutral about.

That being said, the Grilled Cheese Burrito warrants a different handhold than the typical burrito. Unless you feel like gripping the melted cheese, you'll want to cradle the burrito from underneath and do a taco tilt with your head to eat the burrito.

Taken altogether, I really enjoyed Taco Bell's Grilled Cheese Burrito. While the burrito portion was nice enough if a bit too familiar, the "grilled cheese" portion worked out better than I thought.
