Review: Burger King - Chipotle Whopper

Burger King's new, limited-time Chipotle Whopper is part of their current spring menu and features a Whopper beef patty, a spicy chipotle mayo, sweet "Caramelized style" onions, thick-cut bacon, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce, on a wide sesame seed bun.

My local Burger King offers them for $4.99 (you might find it for less; the suggested retail starts at $4.29).

Before, I even unwrapped the Chipotle Whopper, it was a bit of a mess, there was oily brown liquid seeping out of the wrapper, soaking a good half of the bottom bun. It had a funky smoky taste to it and seemed to have come with the onions. I'm pretty sure the "caramlized style" juices were not supposed to have been included in the burger. At least not to such an extent. They gave me all of four of those single-pull napkins, which was not nearly enough to sop up the liquids that came with this burger.

Beyond the whole mess, the chipotle mayo is mostly creamy and smoky, but with a very light spicy kick. The mayo dulls any of the chipotle's lofty, spicy aspirations. It provided a pretty good, if now run-of-the-mill, flavor.

The onions, liquid, and bacon join to create a fire-grilled, slightly charred flavor that works fairly well in the sandwich. It's a pretty distinctive flavor that could have easily gone south, but it worked out well.

The bacon was cooked to that crunchy doneness that adds a slight bitter note. There was about four strips, which was good enough for every bite and a fair bit of flavor as well. I was pretty surprised at how well the bacon's flavor carried, but I have to point out that the previous times I've had BK's bacon, it wasn't this good.

The lettuce and tomatoes were pretty fresh on this occasion, and the tomatoes exhibited a desirable firmness.

I didn't really notice the cheese beyond a little soft, melty texture, but it's supposed to be pepper jack.

The Whopper party is a quarter pound patty that is fairly thin and very wide when compared to other burgers. It's decent, but I prefer a smaller, thicker patty for meatier bites.

Overall, I enjoyed Burger King's Chipotle Whopper a good deal. Not as much as I enjoyed the Bacon Cheddar Stuffed Burger, but it was still pretty good. Chipotle mayo is pretty standard now, but the "caramelized style" onions add a novel flavor, although not very onion-y flavor.
