Review: Hostess - Birthday Cake Cupcakes

Hostess Birthday Cake Cupcakes celebrate the brand's 100th birthday and feature creme-filled frosted yellow cupcakes with rainbow sprinkles on the frosting and in the cake itself.

A 13.1-oz box was $2.99.

Visual appearances aside, the rainbow sprinkles baked into the cake don't make any noticeable impact on the taste or texture. The cake had a relatively dense, soft, and even crumb and wasn't dry or too oily.

The frosting on top offered a pleasant and mild vanilla flavor but was fairly hard, which made me think of the crust that forms on old frosting. The squiggle and the sprinkles echoed the same hardness. It's a little different from the somewhat waxen frosting I'm used to but I wish they went with something more like you'd find on Hostess Zingers. The signature creme of the brand makes up for it a little with the whipped cream-like consistency.

Overall, Hostess Birthday Cake Cupcakes checks off the appropriate boxes for a birthday cake. I mostly liked it and, while not a fan of the frosting, it's still acceptable for a packaged snack cake.
