Review: Krispy Kreme - Cinnamon Rolls

Krispy Kreme Cinnamon Rolls come in two varieties, the Original Glazed Cinnamon Roll and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnamon Roll. The Original Glazed Cinnamon Roll features yeast-raised dough hand-rolled with cinnamon and then covered in the chain's signature Original Glaze, while the Cinnamon Toast Crunch takes the same cinnamon roll and tops it with a cinnamon cereal milk icing swirl and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.

The Original Glazed Cinnamon Roll is $2.79 in my area, while the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnamon Roll is $2.99 but I received these courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

Even though the Cinnamon Rolls come in a custom 4-pack box, the ones I got were a fair bit smaller than the box (there was a good inch or two between the Cinnamon Rolls and the box edges). I would say they're about the same size as Krispy Kreme's donuts.

The Cinnamon Rolls were pretty fresh. The glaze cracked and flaked off as I bit into it and the cinnamon roll portion was moist and pliable.

The Original Glazed Cinnamon Roll appeared to be made with the same dough as their Original Glazed Donut but felt denser and chewier (as a result of being rolled?). There was a definite cinnamon flavor to it--more so than a lot of cinnamon rolls I've eaten. It looks like they roll the dough with just cinnamon rather than cinnamon and sugar and/or margarine or butter. The sweetness mostly just comes from the glaze.

If the Original Glazed Cinnamon Roll offers a certain purity in its cinnamon presentation, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnamon Roll offers a more variety and different layers of cinnamon paired with a lot more sweetness. Overall, it tasted very much like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The cereal was crunchy, not stale, and added a slight buttery quality in addition to cinnamon and sugar. The icing echoed the cinnamon-sugar of the cereal and added a slightly creamy quality.

When it comes down to it, while I enjoyed both of Krispy Kreme's Cinnamon Rolls, I liked the classic taste and more manageable sweetness of the Original Cinnamon Roll better.
